How To (Fashionably) Survive a Chicago Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

Even though Punxsutawney Phil told us that winter would be over shortly and that we can expect an early spring, Chicago winters are known for throwing us a few last minute snowy surprises (Snowpocalypse 2011, anyone)? But no worries ladies, you don’t have to dread being prepared for another blizzard in fear of covering up that cute outfit with a boring coat. Her Campus is here to show you how you can be ready for the cold while still looking great!

The layers: Bundling up is no doubt essential in Chicago. Whether walking to class or shopping on Michigan Avenue, dressing in layers ensures that you stay warm outdoors and don’t get too hot inside. Throw on a chunky knit sweater or cardigan and layer a long parka, like the ever-popular North Face, over top. Make sure to keep your feet warm too with a pair of snow boots and fun socks. Also important? Fleece-lined leggings. They ensure that you can be comfy in class, but aren’t freezing walking around campus. Stock up with several pairs because once you put them on, you won’t ever want to take them off!

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize: Gloves, hats and scarves are some of the most essential pieces to keeping warm. If you’re a serial texter, opt for a pair of touch-screen gloves, or for maximum warmth look for a pair of mittens. For the best of both worlds, try “glittens”: gloves that easily convert to mittens. Head wraps also allow you to keep your ears covered without sitting in class with the dreaded hat hair all day. Nordstrom has several options that will keep you warm and serve as a stylish hair accessory at the same time. Finally, finish off the look with an infinity scarf. Not only will it keep you warm while you’re trekking through the snow, but it can keep you looking both chic and comfy while you’re studying at JTR after class.

Last, but not least: It certainly doesn’t bother to travel with a warm cup of coffee in the winter. Fill up a travel coffee mug (Starbucks always has some cute options) on your way out of your apartment and you’ll be sure to stay warm and awake during that mid-afternoon calculus class. If coffee’s not your thing, tea and hot chocolate work just as well too.

Stay warm, collegiettes! Only a few more weeks until spring!
