Don’t Be Ashamed Of Your Major: STEM to STEAM

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Through our entire lives we have been told to follow our dreams and to do amazing things, but keep a realistic mindset on what you would like to do for the rest of your life. College is no different, you are told to choose realistic majors that will make you the most money. But in today’s society, we are advancing every day. Whether that be technological, medically, or sometimes even artistically. When college students are determining what they would like to do for the rest of their lives they make a check list. Am I passionate about it, could I do this for the rest of my life, and the question that is always on our minds; will it pay well enough so I can help support my future endeavors?

The debate of how STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math, majors and jobs have engrossed our minds by filling it with the ideas that only those job can make you succeed in life. While in some cases that may be true, there are so many others types of majors, jobs, and experiences that can bring joy and provide that satisfying paycheck. But why is this a thing? Why are teachers getting paid not very much to teach the minds of the next generations? Why is it that the people putting information out to the world are getting paid less? Why is it that people may think something is so beautiful, yet the artist behind it is barely getting by? While today’s society has a nonstop cycle of change, this is due to the advances in areas all across the board.

Every major and job do go hand and hand, and you can’t have one without the other. New technological and medical advances need to be put out to society, so the people in media, communications, and PR help with this. Engineers need the help of architects and artists to help design the ideas they have in mind. In science and math, sometime conclusions, analyses’, and essays need to be written in order to explore and explain findings that can parallel the learning from English. By America urging student’s education towards specific technical skills in the field of STEM, it dangerously narrows the path for the future it decreases the chances of fostering critical thinking and creativity within education. STEM contributes great components of education, but the humanities, English, communication, philosophy, and so many more are just as important under the arts.

Society focuses more on the people doing great things in the math and sciences, but what people forget is all the great poems, movies, novels, musicals, and articles that we have read or seen. America is always striving for innovation, but a better way to do this would be through STEAM: science, technology, engineering, ART, and math, making it so students are able to pursue a career something that they are passionate about and can lead a happy fulfilling life.

Currently there are many STEAM initiatives being implemented into schools to help promote students to go into a variety of occupations and vocations. This then is keeping the future bright for those in all areas of studies.
