Not everyone is a supermodel. And certainly not everyone looks flawless with windblown hair, perfectly painted on makeup, and a pearly white smile plastered on their face constantly. Pimples, greasy hair, and morning breath most definitely exist, and I’m sure everyone can agree that sometimes they themselves can wake up looking like a goblin or have a pretty terrible hair day.
Sometimes when you’re out with friends you get so caught up in having fun and running around that the makeup comes off and the hair becomes a little messy and baggy t-shirts and athletic shorts become a go-to outfit. I can most definitely say that I have had my fair shares of times I’ve been trolling around or, more often than not, been the ugly friend with my act not quite together. Taco Bell runs are not something I am too proud of, and I may be bound to be extremely awkward, but when hanging out with my friends, we know that everyone just has those days.
It’s during these times of unbrushed hair, eating far too many crunch wrap supremes from Taco Bell, and being too awkward for photos that my best friend, Breezy, always says, “Ladies remember, if they can’t accept you at your worst they don’t deserve you at your best!” to keep us feeling a little bit better, and it works every time.
Of course, when we meet a boy, we want to put our best face forward. We want that boy to think we are the most gorgeous, poised, naturally beautiful thing to walk this planet. Our hair must always be perfectly curled and hair sprayed, our makeup contoured to perfection, and our outfits showing off our best features. Farts? Never. Burping? Gross. Overeating? Not a day in my life. We want them to believe that we are girls and we don’t sweat, we sparkle and our voices never raise in heated times.
This is not reality.
What we really need is for boys to accept us when we are snotty and sick or lazy and undone and just wanting to hang out. It’s fun to hang out and do crazy, outdoorsy, adventurous things and with that comes knotted hair and bad breath and allergies that make your nose clog up and your eyes turn puffy and red. If a boy can’t look at you then and think you’re beautiful and like you the same as he does when you’re out to a formal event, then why is he even there?
People are people and we aren’t always perfect. No one, not even the queen of all queens Beyonce herself, looks completely flawless all the time. Even that boy you think is perfect, I can guarantee he can let that facial hair grow out to nasty extents, smell pretty stinky, and I bet you $10 that he can burp the alphabet. They can’t expect you to be perfect all the time, and if they can’t accept you for your emotion-crazed and unbrushed self, then they sure can forget to see you in the tight fit dress with your hair in beautiful curls and your lips glossed in shiny pinks. Save that jaw-dropping sight for someone who deserves it.
So, when you’re running a little late or planning an excuse to avoid that boy because of that mountain of a pimple on your forehead, remember that if they can’t accept you at your worst, they don’t deserve you at your best.
