Surviving Valentine’s Day in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

It’s that time of year again: love is in the air and more than a few long distance relationships are challenged to make plans for the big day. Whether this is your first Valentine’s Day alone from your sweetie or you’re a veteran, we have some tips for you to keep things exciting!

1. Plan to watch a movie “together:” You may not be able to cuddle up and drink hot coco on the same couch, but it’s certainly possible to plan an awesome V-Day movie date from afar. Choose a movie that sparks good memories, like the first one you ever watched together and pair it with each of your favorite candies. Plan to call each other then hit play at the exact same time! Although you’ll be miles apart, the little things that bring back good memories from when you weren’t so far away, are a guaranteed way to have a sentimental movie date.

2. Send a care package: Send each other care packages before February 14 hits! Plan to open them together on Skype on Valentine’s Day. Even though you’re not together doesn’t mean you can’t get some yummy chocolate out of it.

3. Have dinner together: Skype is an amazing tool and it can allow you to still have a romantic dinner with your honey! It may not be ideal, but a romantic dinner over Skype is the next best thing to eating with each other in person.

4. Order something unique to be delivered: Guys might not be big flower fans but they definitely love food. Having something sweet delivered like cupcakes is an almost guaranteed way to cheer him up when he can’t be with you on the most romantic day of the year. Baked by Melissa and Georgetown Cupcakes both have delivery services available! A little sugar to fill the void? Sounds like a good plan.

5. Change the date: Valentine’s Day is a day on the calendar to celebrate love, so why not just change the date? Plan a romantic day and night on a day when you can both be together. It will be that much more special because you get to see your significant other and you two will have an awesome date already planned. On the actual day of February 14, try to tune out the romance surrounding you and spend time appreciating friends and family!
