Why I Think the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Should Be Enjoyed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Most little girls, just like I was, would love to grow up to be beautiful models: five foot ten, tan, gorgeous flowing hair, and most of all, skinny. The truth is that not every little girl can achieve this. The genetics things are out of our hands. Sure, there’s plastic surgery, but that’s not for everyone and it is definitely not always successful. But just because we can’t be them doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy watching them.

Tonight, I watched the Victoria Secret Fashion Show and I’m sure there are a lot of women up in arms about now, going on about how the show supports the idea that women are just seen as sex objects or trophies. There are also the girls who are self-conscious of their bodies and complain throughout the entire show about how they are not as beautiful or a thin as the models. My question is, why can’t we appreciate the beauty that is the Victoria Secret Angels? I know I do.

Five feet, three and a three quarter inches are as good as it gets for me when it comes to my height. As a college field hockey player where each day requires a great deal of squatting I know my legs will never be toothpicks and I will never have the thigh gap that so many girls strive for.

Even though I will never be the model that I dreamed of being as a little girl, I’m not going to protest the show. I love it! The girls are beyond beautiful. I know that’s mostly because of the make up and outfits but who cares. The female body in general has been something that has been a muse throughout all history.

Throughout the show I asked some of my friends, “Why do we like this so much?” Not a single one of them could give me a concrete answer. What I think the reason is has to do with the fact the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is just that: a fashion show.

The outfits they’re wearing, though much of their bodies are exposed, are awe-inspiring. The colors and designs are magnificent a lot of fun to watch. But all of them are ridiculous. No one is ever going to wear gigantic wings around, well maybe just some of us that are a little more creative in the bedroom. As humans we are naturally drawn to art and that is why we are sucked into the phenomenon that is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

So there should be no one who is mad about the show. It isn’t about exposing the female body in a sexual way. The Victoria’s Secret Show is about the art and the fun in the outfits they are strutting down the runway in. And as for the women who are upset about their bodies, drop it. Women should feel beautiful in whatever shape they come in. Of course anyone would like to look like an Angel, but not all of us can. Love who you are and do not hate other’s for their bodies. Learn to appreciate the art that you are watching because there is no reason to be pissed off or depressed.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is always controversial. Some people love it and others feel that it should be cancelled. The show should be a fun and exciting thing and certainly not something to cry over.
