Four Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Packing for a Semester Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

Compression Bags are Your Friend

My mom bought me a pack of these when she visited and they were a lifesaver on the trip home. You will undoubtedly acquire some new clothing, gifts, and souvenirs over the semester, which will make it tough to get everything back in the same suitcases you brought over. These are perfect for compressing bulky things like sweaters and scarves (staples of your Euro-chic wardrobe). They’re also great as space-saving dirty clothes bags on weekend trips.

Roll Your clothing

I am a terrible packer. I did research some packing tips before I left and found that an overwhelming majority of sites recommended rolling, not folding, clothing. I tried it and rolling clothing saves tons of space while minimizing wrinkles.

Pack Sweats

I assumed I wouldn’t have a lot of downtime during my semester in Prague, so I didn’t pack a lot of clothing for lounging around. Between studying in my chilly apartment and just hanging out around the house, there ended up being more sweat-wearing time than I had anticipated and I missed my cozy favorites. I’m not suggesting that you pack a whole bag full of sweats, but make sure to pack at least one sweatshirt/sweatpants combo. Yes, they take up a fair amount of room, but sometimes a sweater just doesn’t cut it.

 Bring a Planner

Your semester will be packed with weekend trips, visiting family, friends, and loads of activities – not to mention classes. Having a planner gives you somewhere to organize your busy schedule and as it might be hard to find a planner in English once you are in a foreign country, I recommend bringing your own.
