What Does BCAC Do?

SW: The Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition is an organization dedicated to educating, raising awareness, and fundraising. We raise awareness and provide education about breast cancer through hosting brown bag lunches in which we have individuals speak about breast cancer, women’s health, preventative care, and other topics related to our mission. This year, we have hosted multiple bake sales to raise money for breast cancer research, and at the bake sales, we have distributed pamphlets about breast cancer awareness and prevention. We also host other fundraisers, such as our annual Party for Pink event.

Tell Us More About Party for Pink:

SW: For the past several years, the Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition, with the help of the brothers of Phi Kappa Tau, has hosted Party for Pink. This event, which will take place on February 27th, is not only a fundraiser but also an educational event that aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, what women can do to check themselves, and the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and their mission. [We do this] through the distribution of pamphlets and by hosting a speaker at the event. At the event, money is raised through the sale of raffle tickets for baskets consisting of items donated by Hamilton businesses. We also have a donation website so that individuals who cannot attend the event can still donate and help support the cause. The money we raise will go to YSC, the premier non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and educating young women affected by breast cancer. The event is open to the entire Colgate community and is semi-formal. We have live entertainment provided by The Swinging Gates, Colgate’s all female a cappella group. Delicious appetizers will be served. The event is always a great time, and has been really successful in the past.

How much do you expect to raise this year?

SW: In the past, we have raised around $1,500. This year, our goal is to double that, and to raise $3,000. One way in which we plan to increase the amount we raise is through the establishment of a donation website so that individuals who cannot attend the event can still donate and help support the cause.

Dream Job:

SW: Travel back in time and work as a photographer for Life Magazine.

SK: CEO.

RF: This is so corny, but I want to do something that improves the lives of the people around me in some way. Maybe eventually open a cafe. Clearly, I’m struggling with the whole getting a job thing.

Fun Fact:

SW: I have full conversations talking in my sleep.

SK: I’m a Swiss citizen.

RF: Once, I ran a half marathon, and my iPod broke at the tenth mile.

Favorite Quote:

SW: “Always expect the best out of life, but be prepared for the worst.”

SK: Anything Lucille Bluth says.

RF: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – Nelson Mandela…I had to say this to myself every day while writing my thesis last semester.

Be sure to go to Party for Pink on Thursday, February 27th, or donate here!
