A Cast Member Exclusive: This Is Not A Play About Sex

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

This week the spotlight is on JuliaPaige Joseph ’18!

What is “This Is Not A Play About Sex” generally about?

TINAPAS is a really special play that was written by a Colgate Alum, Poppy Liu. She wrote it as her senior thesis and she conducted interviews with people all around campus about their experiences with Colgate’s sexual climate. It is a play compiled with real words from actual students and so many different, relatable perspectives. The play should serve as a catalyst to get people talking and opening up about their experiences and making changes.

How did you get involved with “This Is Not A Play About Sex?”

Last year I was in Vagina Monologues and I loved the people and the conversations I was having with those people. So I decided to do TINAPAS this semester to continue those friendships and the spread of activism.

How long have you all been rehearsing for?

We’ve rehearsed for five weeks.

What has been your favorite part about being a cast member so far?

My favorite part is bonding with other members of the cast and crew who I probably wouldn’t have met outside of these spaces.

How do you think your experience has changed from being an audience member to actually being a part of the cast?

Being part of the cast comes with a lot of responsibility to really respect a lot of aspects of the show. First, you need to respect people’s time. Showing up on time and being really present in the moment can make or break a rehearsal and it’s important to be your best self because others are putting in a lot of effort to make the experience worthwhile. Second, you learn to really understand the true meanings of each monologue, because you watch how it grows from just a script on a page to a memorized paragraph to a true performance. Each monologue represents a different perspective of Colgate and I’ve learned to really get to understand the monologues and respect their meanings.

Any new surprises we can look forward to during this rendition?

This year there are a lot of new faces in the cast that are unexpected, but in my opinion a huge step for them individually and for Colgate in the sense that people you wouldn’t expect to be involved in something like this actually are.

Are you excited or nervous for opening night?!

I’m very excited for opening night and this weekend! We have great directors, great core members and an awesome cast/ crew. Should be a definite hit!
