I decided to rush during the fall of my freshman year. And corny alert: it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was initially attracted to the social aspects of it. Having danced in high school I knew I wanted to be a part of greek sing, I wanted to get my build on and construct a booth, and more than anything else I wanted to make sure I’d have an easy and positive social outlet in the ever so studious CMU.
However, as FMR (that’s the acronym for formal membership recruitment) continued on I realized that joining a sorority was a lot more than even those things. There were endless opportunities for service, academic resources to make sure my GPA stayed high, and that by joining some greek letters I was gaining the best college experience.
The best thing about being greek for me is the actual house. It’s amazing to come home after a long day, plop on the couch, and really feel home. I never felt at home in the cramped Stever dorms, but felt most happy amongst my closest friends in my house. My house is still an escape and the place I want to be most, on the best day or the worst.
Had I not joined a sorority, I would not have interacted with nearly as many upperclassman as I did and I probably wouldn’t have found my best friends either. I am so grateful I got up the nerve to go through recruitment.
