Year: 2018

Hometown and what you love about it:

Columbia, MD. I love how close I am to both Baltimore and Washington, DC. I grew up going down to the capital, visiting all of the monuments and various museums. I always took it for granted the fact that I was able to experience so much culture from such a young age. Where I grew up has made me into who I am today. I was always so close to the politics and always (to a point) was in touch with what was happening just 30 minutes away. Politics was always such a big part of who I am, and now I want to continue to let it influence me, and maybe have some influence in it!

Areas of study and why you chose them:

Political Science and Women’s Studies. I grew up a feminist and around DC, so putting those two things together was never a question for me.

Why did you choose Chatham?

Chatham was always one of my top choices because I could tell from the moment I stepped on campus that it was a school that empowered women. I need that, I need to know that my education is working for me and the empowerment of my fellow classmates. I also loved how far it was from home. Pittsburgh has given me a new perspective on what the rest of the country is like.

Suppose you can assign a book for every member of the Chatham community to read. Which one do you pick and why?

I would chose a book that I read this year actually. In Dr. Bruckner’s English 105 class focusing on women in speculative fiction, I read Octavia Butler’s Blood Child. I didn’t know I could like fantasy/science fiction until I read her book, so maybe it will open others’ eyes to this type of fiction.

You have a friend coming to visit Pittsburgh, and you can only take them to do one thing. What do you choose and why?

I would take them to Burgatory… best burger I have ever eaten in my entire life.

If a prospective student asked you to name one thing to do while they’re visiting campus, what would you tell them?

Sit in on a class that interest you… don’t sit in on a pre-req. Sit in on a 300- or 400-level class, ’cause then you get to see what you can eventually do with your education.

What is the most unexpected course you’ve taken at Chatham? What did you enjoy most about it?

I’m only a first-semester first year, but I guess Intro to International Relations. I was never really interested in foreign policy, but Dr. Rossbach’s class opened my eyes to the interesting qualities of the international system.

Imagine you can pick one TV or movie character to be your best friend for life. Who do you pick and why?

I would choose Frank Underwood from House of Cards…. He is manipulative and sneaky but he would seriously be a good person to have connections to in the political sector.

Who did you dress up as for Halloween this year?

Rosie the Riveter… classic

What was your favorite childhood Halloween costume?

I was Stellaluna for my first costume, and it has always been my favorite!

What do you love most about Halloween?

Candy!

If you were to go trick-or-treating, which candy would you definitely hope to get?

Kit-Kats

Childhood Dream Job: I wanted to be Dr. House for the longest time.

Current Dream Job: Lobbyist or State Representative and eventually Speaker of the House

What do you love most about being a Chatham student?

The community :)
