On Friday, November 13, 2015, “The Mask You Live In” was screened at Chatham University as part of the Psychology of Gender Research Team’s annual film series. Sponsors included the Graduate Psychology Programs at Chatham University, Psi Chi at Chatham University, AWP Pittsburgh, and The Women’s Institute at Chatham University.
“The Mask You Live In” is a film that follows boys and young men as they struggle to be themselves regardless of America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Boys and young men are constantly pressured by the media, their peers, and the adults in their lives. Those featured in the film confront how they are pressured to not have emotions, devalue friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflict through violence. The film addresses gender stereotypes and how they connect with race, class, and circumstance as well.
The event also included a fundraiser for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR), an incredible local organization that provides support for victims of sexual violence and more. The fundraiser was to collect travel-sized toiletries that would be used to create “comfort bags” for survivors. As we had many wonderful gifts from Her Campus HQ and we recognized what a great cause this was, Her Campus Chatham decided to donate 50 products (including facial wipes and toothbrushes) to the fundraiser to support our fellow, local women in need.
