Why Choosing Not To Drink In College Is Okay

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

It’s all right to drink. It’s also all right not to drink. Whatever you choose, just make sure it makes you happy.

I made the decision to not drink in college. I felt happier spending my Saturday nights immersed in movie marathons, scrolling through Facebook or going to a nice restaurant. I’d honestly rather spend my ‘Thirsty Thursday’ with a milkshake.

So it’s all right. It’s all right to want to stay in and do homework rather than going out drinking. It’s all right to go to that party and turn down drinks. It’s all right to skip beer pong and play charades instead. It’s okay not to drink. Honestly, no one really cares; and if they do care, they don’t matter. What matters is that you’re happy and comfortable with your decision. Trust me, you are not missing out on any part of the “college experience” by choosing not to drink. You are not having any less of a great time than people who do choose to drink.

So if you do enjoy drinking, have fun and be responsible. If you don’t enjoy it, stop. Don’t do it to try to fit in, look cooler or please other people. Just do what feels right to you and makes you happy.
