Ours has definitely been a rocky relationship. For the first 16 years of my life, I despised you. I couldn’t see the good in you, but more importantly, I just didn’t want to understand you. But three years ago, everything changed. I began falling in love with you. I found myself wanting to be around you more and more, and today I can’t imagine a life without you. But do you want to know why I love you so much?
I love you because with you around, life doesn’t seem so chaotic anymore. For once in my life, I don’t need to overthink or be anxious about anything. I don’t find myself over-analyzing your every move, because you’re just so simple to me. You’ve always been straightforward: It’s only black and white with you. Everything just seems to make sense. You have this magical ability to drown out all the noise, and it’s like nothing else even matters anymore.
I know that no matter how hard or messy life gets, I can turn on some music and differentiate all my problems away. Bad day at college? Not once I start solving for x: Algebra always gave me a clearer perspective on life. Fight with a friend? Cosines were always there to turn my frown upside down: Trigonometry never let me down. And even on my worst days, there was always geometry to make me smile again.
Math, everything makes sense when you’re around, and when I’m with you, life seems to be peaceful again. Through every bad day or painful experience, I knew I could count on you to clear my mind and make things right.
People never understood our relationship. They tried to tell me that too much of you was bad for me and that you were manipulative. They warned me to be careful around you, and not get too close because you would just end up hurting me. They didn’t seem to understand my love for you. But how could they? How could I explain to them how happy you make me? How could I explain to them that when I’m with you all my problems disappear? How would they ever understand the kind of clarity you give me?
I love you because you challenge me and there’s nothing I love more than a good challenge. You challenge me to do better and you push me to my limits. Every day is an adventure with you and you make me believe that I can achieve anything I set out to do. With you, I know that if I take that first step, everything will always work out.
