How to Have Your Best Reading Week Ever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Another semester and another (long awaited) reading week! For those of us not fortunate to be spending are breaks at a tropical sunny resort, there are still a lot of fun and productive activities to do during our well-deserved week off from school.

1. Vacation

This may seem farfetched, but with Kingston and Montreal so close by, and only an hour or two away, why not go for a little trip!  With students discounts available for travel and websites like hotwire.com offering cheap and quick hotel rooms, you can still get away from home  without spending thousands of dollars on a plane ticket.

2. Stay-cation

As lame as it may sound, a stay-cation in Ottawa can be so much fun! With Winterlude in its final week, it’s the perfect time to go skating, take in the beautiful ice sculptures and of course grab a beaver tail. It’s also a great time to try a new restaurant, hit up museums and take advantage of this beautiful weather.

3. Pamper

Reading week is a time for relaxation. Catching up on sleep and exercise will have you feeling brand new and refreshed for the rest of the semester.  Walk, go the gym or try something new like Zumba or Hot Yoga to get active. And this time off should definitely include some pampering. A visit to the spa may be a bit pricey but there are some great DIY products that will get your skin, nails and hair looking and feeling great. Best of all, they are natural and use mostly things you already have in your kitchen! Check out some great recipes here.

4. Work  (and/or Job Hunt)

For those who work, reading week is a great time to pickup a few extra shifts. For those that don’t, it’s a great time to start job-hunting. With job postings available on Carleton Central and the Career Centre providing support such as research tools and resume help, Carleton is the best place to start looking. You can also try websites like craigslist.com and monster.ca that provide job listings organized by category.

5. Read

Redundant, I know but reading week should be used, (or at least some of it) to catch-up on readings and plan ahead for rest of the semester. Get a head start on those term papers. Planning ahead will save you stress and the future and hopefully result in better marks.
