Spring 2017 Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal U chapter.

Springtime is just around the corner, which means a new round of fashion trends and styles! Of course, it is important to promote equality and confidence for all people. No matter what gender or sexuality you are, you can slay and look amazing in whatever clothing you wear. Personally, I’m known for throwing on a scarf with any outfit and in any season, but fashion can be exciting for anyone. It is like an outlet for your own personal style. Fashion is a way to express yourself and be confident in your image. The following ideas are a list of trends coming from my own experiences as well as from numerous fashion outlets like Vogue and GQ magazines.

Spring 2017 Trends for Females:

1. Chelsea Boots

Boots are always in style—anywhere from fall, through winter, and into spring. Chelsea boots have become very popular throughout the past few years. They are universal ankle boots that can be worn by any gender. They were extremely popular back in the 1960s, thanks to the “mod” era and especially from the United Kingdom. The boots are tight fitting at the ankle. They usually have a zipper or elastic side panel. Chelsea boots can be found at several clothing stores and it’s completely up to you on which type you want to buy!

2. The Distressed Look

As crazy as it may seem, the “distressed” look is actually really popular. Looking “street” can be really expensive, too—look at celebrities Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, and even Justin Bieber. Unlike what you were taught growing up, it is now acceptable to have holes in your clothes. Whether your clothing is holey, patched, slashed, etc., the “distressed” look is in. But, I suggest not going to Givenchy and spending over $1,000 just to get the look. There are plenty of other, cheaper ways to find your own “distressed” style!

3. Florals

We all remember Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada giving her opinion on florals in spring…

Well, you can agree or disagree with Miranda Priestly, but floral patterns always blowup during the springtime. You want to look and feel as pretty as new flowers and new life arising from springtime. Have you ever seen the Disney movie Bambi? Spring automatically brings up pictures of new flowers growing, baby animals being born, and colors everywhere. It’s a cute time and florals show that! For example, yellow is always a popular spring color, and it looks like yellow will only continue to be worn for Spring 2017.

4. Cut-Out-Shoulder

Hey, your shoulders might get cold, but you will definitely be in style! This idea of cutting out the shoulder (in a top, in a sweater, in a dress…) has been seen everywhere lately. It’s not the same as an off-the-shoulder, but instead the shoulders are just cut out of the garmet. This trend also looks great for all ages! It is a cute, peek-a-boo sexy. Plenty of clothing stores are embracing the cut-out-shoulder idea, so you will have no problem finding the best style for your body. All body sizes can rock a “cold shoulder!”

5. Bra Tops

Yes, you can now wear your bra as a top. It’s like putting your underwear clothing as overwear! What makes this look so fun is hitting the patriarchy in the butt with our bras. No more being nervous or ashamed of having your bra being seen–and no, it’s not a Halloween costume. The bra top has been rising in popularity. It’s a cross between a crop top and a bra, like a bralette. Retail names such as Victoria Beckham and Oscar de la Renta are including this bra top look in their runway shows. The point is, be pretty in your bra!

Spring 2017 Trends for Males

1. Bomber Jackets

The Bomber Jacket has become tremendously popular as a male fashion garmet. As an outerwear look, a bomber jacket comes in different materials, lengths, and styles. The jacket usually has either a zipper or buttons on the front of it. Putting on a bomber jacket helps emphasize any outfit. It can be worn casually or can be dressed up. Whether it has a crazy pattern or is in a plain color, a bomber jacket looks great on anyone.

2. Sneakers

Ok, so tennis shoes seem like an everyday clothing item. You think of wearing sneakers for running or working out. Stereotypically, guys just throw on a pair of tennis shoes with any outfit and go about their day. Well, luckily for those guys, tennis shoes have officially earned their spot as a top fashion trend. Sneakers or “trainers” seem to be one of the top fashion trends for males for Spring 2017, probably because of the variety. Kanye West helped throw shoes into the spolight because of his Yeezy Shoes line. From casual Converse, to the new “sock sneaker” look, to Adidas, Jordans, Nike, and every type in between, tennis shoes are “in” for your feet.

3. Dramatic Hair Changes

I know this isn’t exactly “fashion,” but males changing their hair dramatically has become popular in the entertainment world lately. Kanye West drastically dyed his hair to blonde, Jared Leto is known for switching up his locks color, Zayn goes back and forth between dark and light, and let’s not getting started on Justin Bieber. Also, remember when the world went crazy when Adam Levine saved his head, and then dyed it blonde?! Yeah, males dramatically changing their hair is kind of a big deal, and recently, seems to be a fashion statement. Even One Direction’s Niall Horan surprised fans with his new ‘do.

4. Joggers

Joggers are reigning supreme in the fashion world right now. From celebrities to high school students, so many males are rocking joggers these days. Joggers come in all sizes, colors, patterns, and textures. They can be dressed up or worn down with a t-shirt. Think of them as classy sweatpants, that are really not meant to be worked out in. Although I have no idea what it feels like to wear a pair of joggers, I have heard from friends about how comfortable the trend is to wear. Joggers are also a great way to show off your shoes (refer back to #2!) or the rest of your outfit.

5. Stripes

Patterns are always common in fashion, so maybe stripes didn’t automatically come to mind. But, numerous runway shows for Spring/Summer 2017 are showing stripes for males. Stripes range in length and wide, not to mention color. The pattern can be found on both tops and bottoms. For spring, stripes in blues and purples are most expected. Stripes are a classic fashion style, but it is interesting to see just how clothing and retail stores will mold the pattern into a popular trend for 2017.
