Secret California Getaways

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Ah, it’s finally time! Summer is almost here. Since our three-month-long stretch of freedom is quickly approaching, it can be a little daunting to make plans if you don’t know where to go. Have no fear! If you’re staying in sunny California this summer, check out these hidden gems that will take you far without ever having to leave the state.

For the cowgirl:

Sure, you can stick around good old San Luis to get down and dirty with the horses, but why would you when we have Coffee Creak Ranch? Coffee Creak is a picture-perfect dude ranch located  in Northern California by the Trinity Alps. The place offers physically every camp-y activity you can think of, from line dancing to pedal boating to archery–and everything in between. Their horseback riding program isn’t too shabby either. You can chose your horse, difficulty level, trail, and either the Breakfast Ride, the all-day Wilderness Ride, or the Overnight Pack Trip. Coffee Creak is well renowned for its classic Western film feel and friendly folk.

For the tropical girl:

Ever love to just fawn at how beautiful the boats docked off the shore sway in the warm breeze as the nearby cliff ledge comes alive with sounds of guitar plucking and beautiful people? Yeah, so do I. Well you can experience that right in Southern California. Catalina Island Retreat is an island 22 miles off the coast of LA in a town called Avalon. You can live that lavish seaside life by going on their Avalon Scenic Tour, Skyline Drive Tour or Glass Bottom Boat Voyage, just to name a few. If you really like the ocean, then try your hand at their snorkeling, kayaking and diving programs. The island does a great job catering to the sporty adventurous types while also maintaining that upscale seaside vibe. However, the main reason visitors keep coming back is for the nightlife. The restaurants and bars have live entertainment that’s fun but not but too overwhelming. Visitors can opt for an ocean-front cabana for a more intimate setting. Catalina is essentially the love-child of Hawaii, Maine and the Mediterranean.

For you and your girls:

If you’re looking for the cutest little town to get lost in with your girlfriends, look up north to the town of Carmel. Nestled in the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is one of the most adorable places you’ll ever visit. It hosts an eclectic array of quirky little shops, petite boutiques, historical sites and more. The most popular attraction here is Carmel Village, a quaint  neighborhood filled with shops and eateries tucked away amongst the flowers. You’ll definitely lose yourself in its adorable pathways. While you’re there, stop by Cottage of Sweets. It’s a cute old-school English bakery that sells desserts imported from Europe.

The town of Carmel has a website with more info.

The West Coast truly is the best coast for awesome vacations that you’ll barely have to travel for. Bon voyage!
