We are a little more than halfway through November, and already the beards are coming along great around campus! I’m definitely a fan of No Shave November, and beards in general. I feel as if it adds character and definition to a man. But how do girls on campus feel about this?

After conducting a small investigation for myself, I was able to interview a few Chippewa ladies to get their perspective on this hairy time of year. Here are their feelings on beards:

Deanna Petkov, junior

Relationship Status: Taken

What are your feelings on No Shave November?

“In general, I think this time of year is great because not only does it support and raise awareness for a good cause, but it also let’s guys be themselves and go back to their manhood.”

Does your boyfriend participate in No Shave November?

“Yes, he also calls it ‘Movember,’ like mustache November.”

Where do you draw the line on beards?

“I really like scruff, but I don’t like when it gets too long and when you cuddle, it pokes you.”

Hannah Messer, junior

Relationship status: Single

What are your feelings on No Shave November?

“I mean it had a good cause, but I don’t like when guys have beards.”

Why don’t you like beards?

“I don’t like the way they look because it looks a little dirty and when it touches my face, it bugs me. No Shave November seems to be all unkempt beards, but I can stand a clean, well-kept beard.

Where do you draw the line on beards?

“I like a good, well-kept scruff. It depends on the guys though, because some look better clean shaven and some look better with a little scruff.”

Shelby Anderson, Senior

Relationship Status: Single

What are your feelings on No Shave November?

“I don’t like it because I feel like the only people who do it are hunters and then other guys just take advantage of it to be lazy.”

Do you like beards?

“I don’t like beards, but I like scruff, and I don’t like when they look like little boys.”

Where do you draw the line on beards?

“I don’t really like ‘staches, I like the goatee and scruff on the sides. I would rather have a clean shaven guy than a big, bushy beard.”

Beth Kiurski, junior

Relationship Status: Single

What are your feelings on No Shave November?

“Well, I never really knew there was a point to No Shave November. I just thought it was a thing to look cool, but when I found out this year that it is for prostate cancer, it really changed my mind. Women wear pink to support breast cancer in October, they (guys) don’t shave in November to support prostate cancer!”

Do you like beards?

“Ew no, but I support research and knowledge of cancer so I’ll deal with it… just for a month though.”

Why don’t you like beards?

“They itch, and make a man look old, scruffy, and unclean. And they hurt me when I try to kiss them!”

Where do you draw the line on beards?

“Scruff is okay and having a chin strap is alright, but if it is long and out of control, it doesn’t look professional.”

Emma Hardy, freshman

Relationship Status: Taken (Long Distance)

What are your feelings on No Shave November?

“I always just related it to hockey, and thought boys just followed it for fun or love of hockey… Then later found out it was about supporting cancer. So, now I have mixed feelings.”

Do you like beards?

“I usually do, but not scrappy ones. If you can’t grow a full one then don’t try at all, it looks dirty.”

Does your boyfriend participate in No Shave November?

“So far, yes… Until he gives up.”

How do you feel about him participating?

“He looks good in one, but it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t see him much, so whatever!”

Where do you draw the line on beards?

“Depends on the person, but it shouldn’t hang; I don’t want to be able to brush it!”

There you have it! A small pool of the ladies input on No Shave November! As a whole, these girls seem to like scruff, but don’t want anything to do with the full beard. What is “scruff”? The girls say scruff is a little bit longer than 5 o’clock shadow, defined, and somewhat soft to the touch. So, all you guys out there keep in mind that you should tame the beard and be careful of pokey cuddling!
