The Chips lose to the Broncos for the second straight year

Since 1905 the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Western Michigan Broncos have always played well-fought football games, and Saturday’s game wasn’t any different.

Excitement and bitterness were in the air on Saturday’s much anticipated game as both football teams prepared for the battle at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas were looking for a back-to-back win in the MAC, whereas the Broncos were looking for a win over the Chips in back-to-back seasons.

The Chippewas had a strong start in the matchup by kicking two field goals, and ending the first quarter 6-0 in favor for the Chippewas. However, it only took the Broncos two back-to back scoring possessions to take the lead. The Broncos rallied back in the second quarter by taking a 14-13 lead over the Chips heading into the locker room at the half.

CMU came out of the locker room with attitude and a desire to win, as it was all about the Chippewas in the third quarter. Chippewa’s kicker, David Harman made a 23 yard field goal that was followed by a 58 yard touchdown pass caught by Titus Davis, to give the Chips a 23-14 lead heading into the final quarter.

As CMU students began to leave the game in the fourth quarter with a sense of victory, the Broncos were all about touchdowns. The Chips allowed four touchdowns in the fourth quarter, giving the Broncos their second straight loss to the Broncos. After the loss, the Chippewas became 37-45-2 against the Broncos, and fall to 3-6 in their season.

The Chippewas will travel to Ypsilanti next week to play Eastern Michigan University, and are certainly looking for a win to gain some momentum as their season comes to a close in just a few short weeks.

The Lions stomp over the Jaguars for the most dominate win of their season

A lopsided victory- a term the Detroit Lions aren’t too familiar this season, as all of their games up until this one have resulted in between a three and nine point margin. The Lions defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-14 on Sunday, and were looking like a playoff caliber team for the first time since last season when the Lions made the post-season.

The score remained 0-0 at the end of the first quarter, but Lions running back, Mikel Leshoure quickly changed that, while becoming the first player in their franchise history to score a remarkable three touchdowns in the first half. Not only were the Lions unstoppable running the ball in the first half, but Lions’ star receiver, Calvin Johnson also had a strong start with five catches for 99 yards, before the Jaguars got a single first down.

The second half was no different for the Lions, as they added to their already commanding lead with a 42 yard field goal by veteran kicker, Jason Hanson that was followed by a 10 yard touchdown run by Joique Bell that put the dagger in Jacksonville.

Lion’s quarterback, Matthew Stafford had an impressive performance passing for 285 yards on 33 attempts and allowing the Lions to convert eight of twelve on third down.

The Lions travel to Minnesota next Sunday to play their conference rival, the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions played the Vikings in week 4, and lost 20-13. However the Lions may have found their key to success in Sunday’s win, and can hopefully bring back a victory from Minnesota next week.
