13 New Movies To Add To Your Halloween Watch List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Many of us have kept the same time honored list of spooky Halloween favorites since we were kids, how about we add to the Disney staples and the classic horrors and pumpkin spice it up with some new creepy releases from the last ten years.

1. Crimson Peak

Yeah, there’s a lot going on in this movie. Haunted houses, Victorian gender roles, Tom Hiddleston getting the Internet pregnant, and so, so much more than you’d bargained for. Nevertheless, it’s creepy, classic, and fun. Plus it’s directed by horror master Guillermo Del Toro, so tuck in for a scary good ride.

2. The Mummy

Tom Cruise is back. This time as the selfish yet charismatic Jack in the new remake of the classic, Mummy. It’s the first in what plans to be a long run of remaking classic horror movies like The Invisible Man, slated to star Johnny Depp, and The Bride of Frankenstein, with Javier Bardem. Start this thrilling series this Halloween and enjoy all the more to come.

3. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Someone in Hollywood had a weird blend of a fan fiction and a fever dream and this movie is the result.  A new mix of the romantic writing of Jane Austen’s beloved novel and the fun slasher gore of a zombie movie, this is a great pick for a jump scare filled sleepover on all Hallow’s Eve.

4. Split

I have a friend who works at a movie theater, who said that after seeing this movie the entire staff was not right for a week. I think that pretty much sums the movie up. James McAvoy plays a killer who has multiple personalities disorder in a thriller that will keep you on the edge for the rest of November.

5. Dark Shadows

If you’re a fan of Johnny Depp, and a fan of all things Halloween-y, this is the movie for you. A remake of a 70’s horror T.V. show, Depp stars as a vampire back from the dead after hundreds of years and on the hunt for what remains of his family legacy in this new psychedelic time.

6. Victor Frankenstein

James McAvoy, back at it again with the Halloween hits! This is a remake of Frankenstein, both mixing the novel and the movie lore with the addition of Daniel Radcliffe as Egor and focusing on McAvoy as the Doctor. A whole new monster thriller for a whole new generation.

7. Woman in Black

While you’re on your Daniel Radcliffe binge, Woman in Black is a classic. And by classic I mean it’ll classically scare you silly. Filled with ghosts, mystery and horror, it’s the perfect Halloween spook out.

8. Oculus

This one’s a bit of a psych out movie. Trying to figure out the mysteries behind creepy old artifacts is bad enough, giving us another reason to be scared of giant mirrors is where I draw the line, almost.

9. Fun Size

This is one of those you’ve either heard of it or you haven’t movies. Victoria Justice, right on the cusp of her Nickelodeon career, splashes into this movie that’s a perfect mix of crazy comedy and new Halloween classic. It all starts with a trip trick or treating and spirals from there.

10. Sharknado: Global Swarming. (Or really any of them)

This is one of those movies that, yeah it’s bad, but it still doesn’t’t disappoint. I feel like the internet has talked this one up enough for me, but in case you’re not a connoisseur of quality content let me fill you in, there’s a tornado of killer sharks covering the earth and mix this with bad graphics and you get something that’s a mix of hilarious and gory at the same time and thus the meme is born.

11. Happy Death Day

This movie is hot off the presses. It’s new and people are already lining up to see it. A girl relives her birthday over and over again, yet not in the funny “Groundhog Day” way you’re probably thinking, but it’s because she keeps getting killed on her birthday. It’s a mix of classic horror movie whodunit and a twist on a classic premise.

12. Krampus

Okay, so you know how The Nightmare Before Christmas sparks the debate of is it a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? It’s safe to say the Krampus doesn’t’t care what you think of it. If you’re starting to get the holiday buzz in October but still want to be spooky, the evil Santa is sure to meet you in the middle.

13. It

I’m just going to leave this one here. It’s pretty self explanatory. Needless to say, I really hope this was worth all of the real life impersonators last year.
