The Do’s and Don’t of Surviving Your First Semester of College

The first semester of freshman year is always the most stressful and exciting time of your college career. Everything is new and different! 

1. DO make new friends

Meeting new people and making friends is a vital part of college. Without them, you won’t have anyone to study with, to go to the grocery store with you, or to take much needed walks with. You don’t have to make friends with every single person at your school (unless you really want to) but having a nice-sized group will be enough.

2. DON’T get behind on assisnments 

Try to get all your work done in a timely manner, Falling behind is the worst and will cause you to lose your mind and hours of much needed sleep. Procrastination anad college go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly. Everyone has probably fallen victim to it at least once.

3. DO ask for help

If you ever feel like the struggle is TOO real, ask for help. No one will judge you. We’ve all been there. Whether it is getting a tutor to help you with a confusing assignment or going to Financial Aid to seek assistance with find other ways to pay off your bill – there will always be someone that can help you.

4. DON’T party every day all day

As exciting as it sounds – hanging out with friends, dancing and drinking until the wee hours of the day, you will regret it. Leave the partying for your days off aka the weekend. If you try to balance school and partying during the weekdays, you will exhaust yourself and that is not fun.

5. DO go out and have fun

However, you should definitely go out during the weekends, especially if you are stressed out during the week. Whether going out means dancing for six hours straight or going to see a musical with friends, just get out of your dorm room and have some fun.

Alexandra Whitehead is a Senior at SUNY at Buffalo State. Originally from Virginia, she is majoring in Fashion Textile and Techonology with a concentration in Merchandising. She also has a minor in Theatre. Alexandra is a big advocate for the arts, taking great pleasure in literature, performing, and media arts. She also loves traveling and experiencing new things. In the Fall of 2014, she had the great opportunity to study abroad in London at Regents University. It was an amazing experience that taught her so much about herself and the different cultures around her. When she graduates, Alexandra aspires to be a film/television actress, owner of a eco-friendly fashion boutique, and owner of an animal rescue that saves feral cats and kittens from the streets.
