Oscars 2016: Red Carpet Statements from the 88th Academy Awards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Spring was the theme at this year’s Academy Awards! From floral gowns to youthful, upcoming actors, the Red Carpet was in full bloom. Here’s a rundown of Sunday’s entertainment, including fashion choices, one-and-one interviews to notable quotes.

Fashion Moments

The major fashion trends this year were floral and colors of spring. The fashion moments chosen here are categorized by Fair, Bold, and Daredevil.

Fair

Alicia Vikander

The Academy award-wining actress, starring in The Danish Girl, has stunned the Red Carpet in Louis Vuitton throughout the awards season. At her first Oscars, Vikander wore a “dusty yellow” dress with silver embroidery. Live From The Red Carpet co-host Giuliana Rancic described the dress as “unexpected,” which I have to agree with.

Sophie Turner

Game of Thrones actress wore a unique dress that is not only stunning but also sustainable. Turner is one of two actresses to team up with Red Carpet Green that aims to make humane, eco-friendly clothes.

Daisy Ridley

The breakout star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens shined in Chanel.

Bold

Saoirse (“like interia”) Ronan

The Irish beauty wore a custom Calvin Klein. She requested the dress to be green in support of Ireland. Just lovely.

Mindy Kaling

Cambridge-native Kaling proved the elegance of color blocking. She wore a beautiful dress by Elizabeth Kennedy and carried a Prada clutch. The ensemble complemented her bold and outgoing persona.

Heidi Klum

More like Heidi Bloom. Some people were not too pleased with the dress, but the German model pulled it off.

Daring

Olivia Wilde

This dress is as wild as the actress. Wilde made a daring choice with Valentino Couture, but rocked it in style with a neck chocker.

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi showed off her dynamic tattoo and did not hold back the bling. Her accessories made her simple black dress more electric.

Charlize Theron

Mad Max: Fury Road actress made a courageous move with her Oscars dress. There’s no better make-a-statement color than cherry red.

Red Carpet Interviews

Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger commented that the categories for Best Film show gender equality for the same amount of women in lead roles as men. However, the range of interview questions is not grand when it comes to women. Even though Red Carpet interviewers asked one or two male actors, “Who are you wearing tonight?” the women were asked more about the wardrobe than their career. The best interviewee award goes to Alicia Vikander.

Ryan Seacrest asked Vikander if she was excited to be at the Oscars. The Swedish actress greatly responded, “I think, uh, we’re all excited to be here. We’re all winners.” Basically, she took a nothing of a question and made it something worthwhile. #AskHerMore

Best Quote: “Spoonful of sugar, honey,” E! Network hosts talking about Emily Blunt being rumored to play Mary Poppins in the film remake.
