HCBU Exclusive with “Humble Season” Rapper Moufy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

A local rapper from Roxbury, MA, Moufy has been through his fair share of struggles to get to where he is today, releasing his third album “Humble Season.”

The album, released today on DatPiff (so that all of his fans can listen to his music for free first), captures the story of his parents who came to the United States from the Dominican Republic and the struggles they faced having children at a young age. It also captures his own life story, as a young teen getting into trouble at school and finding his passion for music through those mishaps. His previous albums are  “City Dreaming,” “Boston Lights,” and “The Preparation.” His music is diverse and he likes to touch on a lot of topics, which is why he’s excited about his new album.

“I think it’s the best because it’s very themed. It paints a story. People can get an understanding of a Latino kid growing up in Boston and using all of his energy to make it into the music business.”

One of his songs “New England Rolling” has a region-based theme with a different kind of spin on it than his usual songs. Another song “Tell Me Something” is predicated on meeting a girl, showering her with compliments, and her accepting the compliments without giving anything in return. Moufy’s experience of coping with the loss of a mentor became the inspiration behind his song “No Way.” He is particularly proud of this song because of the meaning behind it.

“My mentor meant a lot to me. I had to behave and dress up everyday and he helped me mature as a person.”

Along with the help of his mentor, Moufy has had great support from his family. According to him, his family was the catalyst for the buzz around the region. From the beginning, they spread the word about his music, which helped him gain his first of many followers. Moufy finds inspiration from his family, especially his mother.

“My mom is a survivor. We went through a lot of tough times, but we are still here and she raised us right.”

And let’s not forget the fan support that he has accumulated over the years. Moufy came up with the idea for Star Gang, a fan promotional group, to help spread the word about his music. He chose the name because the group consists of urban kids with high hopes for the future, aspiring for greatness. It is a group of kids who want to reach for the stars.

“We pride ourselves on core fans, so we give them the permission to play a bigger role.”

Although Moufy spends most of his time focusing on his music, he likes to hang out with his friends, watch TV (he loves CNN and politics) and play sports.

Moufy, like any other guy, thinks about girls. Although he’s not the “softest” man around, he would love to be able to meet someone and fly her to the Dominican Republic and have dinner on the beach.

“I want girls to know that I’m a great listener, and I really like to converse.”

Not only is Moufy a talented musician and communicator, he also has many other great qualities.

“I’m very ambitious. I’m adventurous; I’m always on the move. I value family a lot. I also have a different sense of humor.”

For people growing up with similar backgrounds to Moufy, he wants them to focus on their dreams and just go for it.

“Live in vision; live in the progression of that vision. Try not to live in circumstances.”

Hopefully, Moufy’s fan base and career continue to escalate across the nation as his new album premieres. He wants to become one of greatest musicians with an international fan base and capitalize on the opportunity to make more music.

Let’s all support Moufy in this dream by listening to his album “Humble Season” on DatPiff (then later buying it on iTunes) and attending his show at Brighton Music Hall on March 8th at 7 pm. You can also like his page on Facebook or follow him on Twitter.

HCBU had the chance to sit down and get to know Moufy better. Through following Moufy on his journey, we have a feeling you will like him as much as we do.
