Creative Ways to Use Coconut Oil

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

With so many different hair and skin products out there today, people sometimes forget about the natural concoctions that were used for thousands of years. Coconut oil is not a secret in the world of health and beauty anymore, but people don’t know about the many different ways it can be used. Here are a few creative ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine!

Hair: If you are struggling with dry hair and scalp, coconut oil is perfect for you! Just apply the oil directly to the scalp and work your way down to the ends of your hair. Leave it in for at least an hour. If you can, try and apply the oil at night and sleep with it in, then rinse it out in the morning. This is a good treatment for anyone trying to make his or her hair softer and shinier.

Skin: Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer for your skin. You can either apply it directly to your skin after getting out of the shower, or you can mix it with your regular body moisturizer. Mixing it reduces the sticky feeling and also allows it to dry quicker.

Teeth: This use for coconut oil turns a lot of people off, but it is very beneficial. It really does produce great results. If you want whiter and brighter teeth, take a spoonful or two of the oil and put it in your mouth. Swish it around for five to ten minutes, spit, and then feel a completely new form of cleanliness. I like to brush my teeth once, swish around the coconut oil, then brush my teeth again just to make sure they are extra clean. If you do this routinely, you will notice your teeth are much whiter and a lot cleaner.

Makeup Remover: If you are looking for a more natural way to take your eye makeup off, then coconut oil will work wonders. Most natural oils are very good for taking off eye makeup, but coconut oil also works as a moisturizer for the under eye area. Oil based makeup removers allow you to remove makeup easily without pulling and scrubbing, which can hurt the sensitive area.

Shaving Cream: Because coconut oil is pretty much water resistant, it works perfectly for shaving in the shower. It also helps moisturize the legs while shaving.

If you are on a budget, coconut oil is one of the most beneficial products at a very reasonable price. You can buy it on amazon, or in most local grocery stores!
