The Best and the Worst of the T

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I love Boston’s public transportation. I have a T stop right behind my dorm, and can pretty much go wherever I want for only $2.00. From late nights back to BU, switching lines at South Station, dragging my suitcase up the stairs on my way to Logan, and the occasional “I’m way too lazy to walk to Newbury,” the T has served me well, and sometimes, not so well.

Here are some of the best and worst things I’ve encountered while riding the infamously late T:

1. (Worst) My first time on the T was during freshman orientation, and it was the first time my mom saw BU (the place she would be sending her first child hundreds of miles away to). We maybe made it three stops when the man across the isle from us blacked out and began to get sick. They stopped the T and called 911. Also, there were luckily three doctors in our cart, but needless to say, we were terrified.

2. (Best) While riding the T back from Newbury with my friends a little boy and his grandpa were making a bet about how many people would leave a particular door at the next stop. Knowing that we were getting off, I held up three fingers so the little boy could see (the grandpa could see what I was doing in the reflection the whole time). As expected, the T stopped, and the three of us got off. I think he got ice cream for winning, it was the cutest thing ever.

3. (Worst) Although I wasn’t on the T yet, to the guy who grabbed my arm and tried to make me put money on his Charlie Card at the Hynes station, it wasn’t appreciated.

4. (Best) When I took the T to the airport for Christmas Break, I ended up getting confused and a little lost when I was supposed to switch onto the silver line for Logan. A woman, who also got on the T when I did and had a suitcase, stopped and helped me find my way.

5. (Worst) My friend and I were on the T during the time that it seemed like the entire city had a cough and she had a tickle in her throat. A man, who was clearly intoxicated, told us to “lay off the pot” and then asked if she wanted, “some Jack Daniels to clear up that cough.” Thanks, but no thanks.

6. (Best) A group of friends had to get off the T at separate stops. One boy stepped off with a simple “bye,” but then said “WAIT,” and ran back on the T, almost tripping up the stairs, to give a girl in the group a kiss before jumping back off as the doors were closing. You could tell that they weren’t a couple yet and that maybe this kiss just made this official, but it was adorable. I didn’t think this kind of stuff happened in real life.
