5 Tips for Chapped Lips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Let’s fast-forward about one month: the first snow has fallen, you’ve bought the cutest parka on the market, and your Bean boots are a wardrobe staple. At this point in the year, Boston is beautiful. There is nothing more picturesque than snow-covered Bay State brownstones with windows reflecting the Citgo sign. However, as with anything in life, following every perk is a challenge. You and your current eye-candy are walking along the Charles and, while pausing to reflect at the view; you turn and look into each other’s eyes. And there, right there, you remember how chapped your lips are. This realization takes this moment from being on par with every winter rom-com ever, to an awkward pretending not to feel the evident sexual tension situation. With the dropping temperature, biting wind and the humid indoors with their artificial heat, those luscious lips had no chance. However, you still have a month! You can solve this classic problem by avoiding it all together. Here are five tips to keep your suckers from sucking this winter.

1. Don’t lick your lips

When you lick your lips, you actually dehydrate them. The additional saliva dries up quickly, evaporating any natural moisture with it. So, break this habit ASAP.

2. Avoid lip balm containing camphor

The rumor about lips getting addicted to lip balm is just that, a rumor. However, it did start from somewhere. Some lip balm companies add ingredients, such as eucalyptus, menthol, and camphor to their products in order for you to use it more often. These ingredients actually dry out your lips, even though initially they help moisturize. Burt’s Bees and EOS don’t have any of these ingredients, if you’re in the market for some good lip balm.

3. Keep lip balm near your bed

Most people sleep with their mouths open, which, while probably have led to some fantastic napping pictures, leads to dry lips because of the very dry heat that comes from indoor heaters. So, instead of trying to adjust your natural sleeping position (ain’t nobody got time for that) just lather your lips very thoroughly before going to sleep.

4. Drink water

You should do this always, whether or not your lips are chapped. Yet, chapped lips do result from dehydration so drinking water is a basic and natural solution. Get a cute water bottle just for inspiration.

5. Keep a cute colored lip balm in your backpack

Lip balm is made for chapped lips. If you apply it regularly, your lips will remain luscious. But, remembering something so trivial is somewhat of a hassle. If you have a cute colored one though, you will look adorable for that Charles River bae and be able to have that movie star moment without hesitation.
