So, it’s finally here – the big 2-1. You are FINALLY able to (legally) get into bars and clubs and graduate from the frat house basement parties and the dorm parties that get shut down by 1 AM. You are officially an adult.

From one recent 21 year old to another, I want to emphasize the importance of turning 21 safely. It’s a big scary world out there in the bars and clubs, a lot of different people roam around and are looking for some company. The second thing: your ID gives you a lot of power; you have to learn how to use it. As Uncle Ben says in Spider Man “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Now, I haven’t crossed the obligatory threshold of that first bar experience but between my parents, friends who are already 21 and my own common sense, I have a list of how I will go about my first experience safely and smartly.

1) Go with a group: All my friends who I have approached about going out with have said we need a group of four to five.  It’s apparently more fun but you will also have a lot of people who have your back. Choose this group carefully: go with the guy you think is cute and want to get to know, go with your best friend who has been waiting for you to turn 21, maybe meet someone new, BUT make sure you have one person you know will be there for you if you go too far.

2) Be aware: Notice who is around you and stick with someone you know at all times. Make sure you know where you are, because if you don’t, then you probably should start thinking about finding your friends, leaving and going home to sleep.

3) Be money smart: Everyone has already warned me how expensive alcohol is. That, I can attest to. Be smart about how you spend your hard earned money, us college kids don’t grow money on trees! If you share your alcohol with your friends don’t hesitate to ask them to pitch in a few bucks!

4) Have fun! This is probably most important, have a good time and enjoy your new freedom! Try a new drink combination, and make a toast with your friends, enjoy the new experience!

5) DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE: This is actually the most important. If you are going to a bar with friends, then don’t drive unless you have a designated driver.  You don’t want to make a stupid decision that could end horribly wrong.  Either take Joseph’s shuttle if you are going into Boston or call the BranVan if you are local.
