Shanny Shmuel ’12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Shanny Shmuel
Hometown: Cherry Hill, NJ
Year: 2012
Major: Psychology and History

You’ve probably seen Shanny on your way to your dreaded morning class handing out candy and a hot drink. She basically lives to make everyone on this campus just a little happier. She took the time out of her busy schedule, especially now that it’s finals week, to sit down and talk to us about what she does to brighten people’s day.
HC: What are you involved with on campus?
SS: I am the director of Student Events. I’m co-president of PERC. I work at the Lemberg Children’s Center. I also am a research assistant in the Aging, Culture, and Cognition lab.
HC: What is your favorite role that you play?
SS: I would say being director of Student Events. I’ve been on it since sophomore year and held various positions. Being in charge of it is very rewarding.
HC: What does being the director of Student Events mean?
SS: Student Events does a ton of programming for this campus: spirit weeks, concerts, wake n shakes. I make sure that the assistant directors are doing their job. We also work with other clubs; for example we are working with the Student Union on the grand re-opening of the pool, which we called “Making Waves”.
HC: If you could change on thing on this campus, what would it be?
SS: I would try to up our school spirit even more. I know we don’t have a football team, but we can support other sports. We could be more excited about things that are going on campus.
HC: Why did you pick your majors?
SS: I just really liked history, so I picked it up when I realized that I had the time. I picked Psychology because I like working with people. It allows you to help people in the future.
HC: What are some upcoming event ideas that you have?
SS: Well we have a hand in Student Union’s Color War initiative. We’re also working on bringing an exciting concert in February, but I really can’t get into detail on it. We tend to work  a lot on little things that make students happy. Getting ourselves out there in small ways that make peoples days better, like the Wake n Shakes.
What do you do at the Lemberg Children’s Center?
SS: I am a teacher’s Assistant; it’s my on campus job so I basically play with 3 and 4 year olds all day.
HC: What do you like most about this campus?
SS: I really love the people and the community feeling. Because it’s small but not too small, you don’t have to know everyone. There is something more than just going here for academics. The community feeling that we have here is really welcoming.
HC: What’s a fun fact about yourself?
SS: I’m left handed and I’m really proud of it. Anyone who is left-handed should be… it’s really important that we all have pride.

Andrea is a sociology major with minors in journalism and women's and gender studies. She is currently finishing her senior year at Brandeis University. She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
