The 5 Stages of Procrastinating for Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

We all know finals are coming up quicker than we’d like to admit. While this crazy busy time of the year does mean we are getting closer and closer to a nice long vacation, it also means exams, papers, and presentations will dominate our lives for the next 3 weeks. Amidst all the studying, it’s not uncommon to find yourself inclined to procrastinate on that daunting mountain of work that seems to loom in front of you. Here are a few of the main stages of procrastination:

Netflix.

Do I really need to say much more? Whether you decide now is the perfect time to start binge-watching a brand new show, or a 20 minute episode break turns into multiple hours, everyone knows the struggle of resisting Netflix all too well.

Cleaning.

You know how all semester long you’ve decided you had better, more pressing things to do than clean your room? Well of course now seems like the perfect time to scrub every inch of the place! It’s not like you have finals coming up or anything…

Social media.

I swear that there never seems like a more perfect time for Facebook stalking than finals week. Suddenly, I want to look at all the pictures in everyone’s albums and read all the articles they have shared. Facebook has never been more amusing!

Food.

Suddenly I’m extremely hungry all of the time. Whether it’s a “quick” trip to the C-store, a leisurely meal in Sherman, or an hour spent in Upper because “the line for Currito was just so long,” we all know that meals and eating can definitely be used as procrastination methods. I mean, you need to eat right?

Friends.

Social interaction is EXTREMELY important, and we all love our friends and want to spend as much time as possible with them before we are separated by break. But, when you find yourself spending hours sitting on your phone in silence in your friend’s room its not a social break, it’s procrastination at its finest.

But when it’s all said and done we all know we just have to tough it out for the next couple of weeks and then we are done. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel people! Good luck on finals!

I am a double major in Anthropology and International/Global Studies with a minor in Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation at Brandeis University. As a native Southern Californian, I have a born passion for avocados and an innate dread of cold weather. In my free time I love cooking (with avocados of course), drawing and writing.
