3 Romantic Comedies to Watch this Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Whether you spend February 14th with a significant other, a loved one, a group of friends, your family, or anything in between, nothing says “Valentine’s Day” like a romantic comedy. So grab that box of chocolates and cuddle up to one of my favorites.

1. The Proposal

This is one of my go-to romantic comedies when I want to laugh and feel good. Sandra Bullock plays a high-powered publisher whose visa has expired and is facing deportation to Canada. In order to extend her stay and continue her work, she pretends to be engaged to her assistant, played by Ryan Reynolds. As they attempt to trick everyone around them, they get into a variety of escapades (most of which take place on a hilarious trip to Alaska to meet the parents). As the movie progresses, these two characters discover that they may not hate each other after all.  Not only is this movie sweet and romantic, but also it is also extremely funny.  Three words: Betty White rapping.

2. 27 Dresses

Have you ever heard of the expression: “always a bridesmaid, never a bride?” That’s exactly what is happening to Katherine Heigl’s character in this 2008 film. She has been in 27 weddings and is desperate for her own walk down the aisle (and secretly in love with her boss!). When her young sister waltzes into town and catches the attention of Jane’s (Katherine Heigl) secret love, Jane must wrestle with the idea of once again being a bridesmaid, and this time for the wedding she wanted to have! Add in a cute wedding reporter played by James Marsden and this movie is a frothy and fun treat.

3. Bride Wars

This one’s for those of you who like a little wedding drama. Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson play childhood best friends who share the same dream of one day being married in June at the Plaza Hotel. When they both end up getting engaged, they rush to one of the best wedding planners in the city to make their dream a reality. Unfortunately, there is a scheduling error and their weddings are booked for the same June date, and the Plaza has no other options! Watch these two best friends battle it out over whose wedding will be best by sabotaging each other in the most hilarious of ways. Will they work it out in the end and realize friendship is more important than the material things? You’ll have to watch and see.  This one is more about the weddings and the friends than it is the relationships, but there’s still some juicy drama in there!
