How To: Choose The Perfect College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

No matter what grade you are in in high school, it’s never too early to start looking into your future. It’s not exactly the best to wait until the last minute. Choosing which college you want to spend part of your future in is a major decision that takes time. Waiting until the very last minute could force you to make the wrong decision, which probably wouldn’t make your parents very happy if they’re the ones paying for it. Here are some ways that you can be sure you’re making the right choice when it comes to choosing which college to attend.

1. Sit down with your parents and discuss how far they’re willing to let you go, how much they’re willing to spend, etc.

It is important to talk with your parents about college specifics including how far they’re willing to let you go or how much they’re willing to pay for your college education. You don’t want to pick a college in California if they’re limiting your college experience to the east coast. You also don’t want to pick a college that’s out of your price range unless you are applying for scholarships and/or financial aid. This tip is probably one of the first steps you should take before applying anywhere.

2. Do some research early!

Begin your research around the beginning of your sophomore year. You don’t have to commit anywhere, but it is important that you research colleges that fit your priorities after the talk with your parents. Research scholarship opportunities, various colleges in certain states, athletic teams, undergraduate studies, anything that is important to you and your family.

3. Take college tours, open houses, workshops, etc.

While you are doing research, it is important to take advantage of any and most opportunities that the college is having. If you’ve narrowed down your search to a few colleges, see if any of them are having open houses or workshops that you can attend. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and explore the environment to see if it’s right for you.

4. Take your time and really think about it.

This is not a decision that you should rush. You should think through it for a while so you can be 100% positive that that college is the perfect pick for you. You should do this after you attend a few workshops or open houses, after you get a feel for the environment. It is a good idea to have another talk with your parents and get their insight into which college they liked the best and other specifics.

5. Contact the professors within your desired major or majors.

If you already know what you want to do with your life, it is a good idea to contact the professors or other students you might know in that same department. You can get a feel for the workload and other academic information that could be crucial when picking which college you want to attend.

Of course, you don’t need to follow all of these tips. However, following them would make the college picking process a lot less stressful or difficult. These tips could lead you to the best decision of your life.
