Why Guy Friends Are the Best Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Your best girlfriends are irreplaceable. Who else will cry with you through last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy or help you finish off a box of Thin Mints over a conversation about Jennifer Aniston’s hair? But sometimes there are problems even our best gal pals can’t solve, and some topics that just can’t be discussed honestly with our roommates. At the end of the day, every Lizzie needs a Gordo, every Joey needs a Dawson, and every Jess needs a Schmidt, Nick, and Winston. While nothing compares to your friendship with your best girlfriends, here are some reasons why guy friends really can be the best friends.

1. Guy friends are judgment-free

Guy friends don’t care that you haven’t showered in two days. Guy friends don’t care that you are eating cold pizza for breakfast. They don’t care that you drank too much last night and walked home barefoot, high heels in hand. Guys can be really gross, and since they aren’t trying to date you, they don’t care how gross you can be. Of course, girlfriends aren’t supposed to judge you either, but there can be some pressure to at least appear put together. With guys, that standard just doesn’t really apply.

2. Guy friends are always willing to hang out

We’ve all been there: it’s Friday night, you’re ready to go out and have a great time, but all your girlfriends have an excuse not to. “I’m way too tired,” or “I’m having a Netflix night,” are the last things a girl who’s ready to party wants to hear from her friends. But, guy friends are always down to hang out. They could be watching a basketball game with a case of Bud Light or throwing a huge pre-game, but they never have a problem with you joining. There are obviously exceptions, but every good guy friend enjoys your company as much as they enjoy sports and beer.

3. Guy friends are terrific body guards

Unlike girlfriends, who can get separated throughout the course of the night, guy friends keep a watchful eye on you at the bar or at parties. They’ll save you from creepy guys trying to start conversations with you, and help you get a cab if it’s that kind of night and it’s time to go home. They’re going to do their own thing, but they also won’t leave you high and dry if you really need some help.

4. Guy friends offer fantastic unbiased, third-party opinions

Sometimes getting an honest, straightforward answer from your girlfriends can be tough. They don’t want to hurt your feelings by telling you the shirt you’re trying on is really ugly, and they can be passive aggressive with their opinions about the new guy you have a crush on. Guy friends, however, are blunt and direct. They’ll tell it to you like it is basically because it’s less effort than cushioning a constructive critique of your shoes. And while girl drama can be toxic to boys, guy friends will be more than willing to tell you if you’re being irrational or if you’re justified in a fight with your girlfriend. They might not understand why her shrinking your favorite sweater in the dryer is a big enough deal to initiate friendship warfare, but they’ll at least be able to tell you if you’re being crazy.

5. Guy friends love you just as much as your girlfriends

They’ll never admit it, and they’ll show it in very weird ways, but guy friends care about you in the same ways that your girlfriends do. While your best friend might show she loves you by Instagramming a picture of you two on your birthday or by holding the tissues when you’re crying over your latest heartbreak, guy friends can show this love in mysterious ways. Usually, through all the things listed in 1-4, like carrying you home and being honest with you. Friendship with guys can get cloudy sometimes, but at the end of the day, gender doesn’t determine how close you are and how much you care.

Guy friends might not seem like the ideal shoulder to cry on, and they might not have the perfect closet to raid when you have nothing to wear. But, they have big hearts and open minds, which can make them some of the best friends any Collegiette could have.
