What Not to Say to a Nursing Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Nursing students get tired of hearing some things that people constantly ask us. Even though everyone knows that we work hard and stress a lot, there are some things that no one should ask any nurse. Although we might look like we haven’t slept in a while or are always complaining about being tired, we wouldn’t change our careers for the world. We bust our butts to save yours.

1. “Why don’t you just become a doctor?”

*rolls eyes* This question makes me the most frustrated. As future nurses, we choose our careers for a reason. It takes a lot of effort to get through nursing school but we chose to stick around and endure it all. We love what we do and are extremely passionate for what we do as well. If we wanted to be doctors, we would be aiming for med school but we aren’t…so don’t question or abilities or choices. Doctors are great, but without nurses, healthcare just wouldn’t work the way it does.

2. “Why are you always busy/going to bed early?” Or, even worse, “Why do you do this to yourself?”

Try having multiple labs and nursing classes and cores and other stuff that we do AND trying to just live life. Sometimes, it gets a little hard to breathe. I’m always on my feet or busy but that’s the way I like things and if I didn’t love what I was doing, I wouldn’t be doing this to myself. There’s nothing better than getting out of bed and getting through a tough class and wondering what its going to be like to be a full fledge nurse after graduation. Even though that’s three+ years for me, I look forward to that day so much. bottom line: let us get some sleep and have a ridiculous amount of coffee

3. “Are you going to work with McDreamy?!” or even worse “Is that like in Grey’s Anatomy where…”

Stop right there… life is not Grey’s Anatomy. I would love a McDreamy but like I said, life isn’t like Grey’s. Even though this question peeves me, I can’t wait to say that it’s a beautiful day to save lives.

4. *point to random part of the body* “What muscle/bone is this?” or “What’s wrong with my ____ its been _____?”

Chances are, I have no idea what’s wrong with you but my prediction is that you will live. Maybe ask me in a few years and I’ll know more about what I’m doing.

5. “Your scrubs are SO cute!”

(This one doesn’t frustrate me at all.) We have to wear these but they’re very comfortable. But, Thank you, I like my scrubs too.

So be careful what you ask a nurse!
