Weathering the Bipolar Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I’ve lived in New England for my entire life and I still cannot seem to grasp the weather here.  I struggle daily to choose the perfect outfit that will prevent me from being either freezing to death or sweating bullets after only a few hours.  Let’s be honest: New England weather sometimes sucks.  It can be sunny one morning, then a sudden downpour can come by the afternoon.  You’ll wake up in the morning with dark clouds, expecting that the day would be cold and rainy, but in just a few hours later, it’ll be hot and sunny.  It’s that time of the year once again when summer’s about to pack its bags, but is going through a serious matter of separation anxiety.  So, what’s a girl to wear during this hot-cold-hot weather? How about we just compromise?

Before you go and pack away your summer essentials, mainly sundresses, shorts, and tank tops, consider how you could make these items versatile for the fall chill.  How about adding a denim or leather jacket, a pair of cozy tights, ankle boots, a beanie, or scarves to these looks to keep you warm but also chic?  The easiest solution is to stock up on lightweight layers like a cardigan or jacket that can be added or removed during the day.  This way you will be able to confront whatever Mother Nature decides for that day.

Another important fact tying into this is the importance of layers.  You should, at all costs, avoid heavy fabrics during this transition time and instead opt for more layering pieces.  Like previously mentioned, scarves are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing for an outfit.  They can be wrapped around our heads to ward off sudden gusts of wind, can protect our hair from getting drenched in unexpected rain, and can of course keep our core warm.

Furthermore, not wanting to let go of your mismatched pastel prints?  Add cozy sweaters and denim too.  Still holding on to your high-waisted denim shorts?  Complement them with a long-sleeved shirt and a jewel-toned scarf.  Wanting to wear your summer statement necklaces?  Pair them with a cashmere sweater and skinny jeans (go for darker denim for the fall).  Having separation anxiety from your favorite maxi-dress already?  Layer it under a thin sweater for a stylish look.

These first few weeks of summer transitioning into fall are always the hardest clothing-wise but with these helpful tips, you should be able to tackle anything Mother Nature throws in your way.  Follow this advice and you’ll never be caught cold this fall again.  It’s time to say farewell to sweet summertime and a hello to autumn!
