She Does What? Women’s Strange Habits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We’re all guilty of them: strange quirks, weird habits, and unconscious attention-attracting behaviors.  How many times have you witnessed a woman doing something kind of strange or acting irrationally silly? How many times have you, yourself, been seen doing something offbeat?  Now, I am not talking crazy behaviors, but just little tics that are noticeable to the stranger sitting next to you on the T or the guy you work with every Saturday.  I asked around to discover some weird female habits and this is what I found.

Talking on the Phone while Peeing
Okay, so this is just strange.  I have witnessed this in restaurant bathrooms, mall bathrooms, airport bathrooms, and even dorm bathrooms here at BC.  If there is a public restroom, it can be done.  But why would anyone want to talk to someone while they are peeing?  And who would want to be on the other end, hearing strange, seemingly foreign noises in the background?  Why not wait a few minutes and make the call?  These situations are just awkward for the people involved as well as any innocent witnesses who happen to be using the bathroom.  On the other hand, I guess a bathroom stall is semi-private?  At least in comparison to other public locations.

Dumping Salt (or Other Condiments) on Finished Meals
I understand the motive behind this behavior, but I always feel strange when I witness women grabbing the salt and not sprinkling, but dumping salt on to their half eaten burger, leftover pasta, or picked a part cake. Saturating meals in salt would definitely make me stop eating, especially if the salt was dumped on something sweet.  I have even witnessed women pour multiple dashes of hot sauce on to unwanted meals to prevent themselves from eating more.  I guess this is one way of implementing self-control.

Always Having a Snack on Hand
This behavior definitely isn’t as weird, but many girls will admit that they always carry a small snack with them just in case.  HC BC writer Caitlin Mann shares, “All the girls I work with (myself included) always have a small baggie of some sort of snack with us at all times, just in case we get hungry.  It will either be crackers, some fruit, trail mix, or something else along those lines.  It is not a lot, but just enough to tide us over until we can eat for real.”  I definitely am guilty of this habit – I won’t be caught out without a bag of trail mix in my backpack, purse, or gym bag. You never know when hunger will strike and isn’t it better to always be prepared?

Purposefully Limiting Spending Money
Let’s face it, most collegiettes struggle when it comes to resisting amazing shopping opportunities.  If a bag I have been admiring at Kate Spade goes on sale, I can’t help but buy it because it’s on sale, right?  Well, some women control this impulse by limiting how much cash they carry with them at one time or how much money they keep accessible in their checking account.  HC BC writer Caitlin Mann explains, “I know a bunch of people who don’t carry more than $5-10 with them so that they aren’t tempted to spend money.  However, they still have a few dollars on hand just in case they absolutely need something.”

I am sure there are tons more quirky habits that you have either witnessed firsthand or maybe have yourself. Let us know in the comments if you have witnessed any strange quirks, weird habits, or attention-grabbing behaviors! We would love to hear!
