I Really Don’t Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Once you become 16 years old, struggles slap you in the face from left and right. First, it was deciding which tests to take: SAT, ACT, SAT II, and AP exams. Then, you had to decide how many times should you take them, and if it was really worth taking them another time. When you think you’ve moved passed this rough patch, you are sucked into a black hole known as the College Process: the 24/7 struggle of figuring out which college you want to apply to and what your major on your application will be. Not only did you have to decide which college to apply to, but also when you applied made all the difference, whether is is Early Action, Early Decision I, Early Decision II, or Regular Decision. Fast forward. You’re at college. Congrats!

Now what. You have to pick a major, and if you’re lucky you stick to the one on your application. If it’s “Undecided,” however, you have less than two years to pick a major to help guide your career choice. So maybe you have a major, but what do you want to do with it? There are hundreds and thousands of different career paths we can all take, but how do we decide what we want to?

As an Economics major, people expect that I am trying to go into politics, business, or something along those lines. I currently have no idea what I want to do with my major. It’s interesting learning about spending habits and the way different theories work, but I simply just do not know what I want to do with my major. I feel like every time you celebrate something, it comes with more challenges, but that’s just life.

I know that I am not the only one out there who feels this way. Some of my friends have their entire lives planned out, and meanwhile I am still figuring out if I want an omelette or a muffin for breakfast. It’s ok to not know what you want to do with the rest of your life. It’s not only great if you have a job after college, but also if you are passionate about your job. People stay at their jobs for an average of 4.4 years. Keep in mind people change their occupations as often as it takes to complete a Bachelors degree.

They say follow your passion, but I don’t think watching Netflix as a full-time job is a real occupation…yet. All jokes aside, if you are feeling confused, look for internships for anything you are interested in to help guide your career path. It is easier to figure out what you do like and what you don’t like by having hands-on experiences to base your career choice on.

College gives us the opportunity to explore our passions. Luckily, here at Boston College, it is so easy to study anything that you are interested in. With the possibilities of double majoring, majoring and minoring, or majoring and double minoring, we are able to study a variety of different subjects to lead us to a career.

So yes, I am one of the lucky ones who came into college freshman year with a major, but that’s not the end of this journey. I wish to all my fellow Collegiates good luck if you are going through this state of confusion about a career path, and good luck to those who can envision their dream job! This is only the beginning of another long journey, but it’s what makes life so much more interesting.
