How Not to Bring Your Whole Closet Home for Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you brought a lot of clothes to college, more than you’d care to admit. This winter break, my vacation time is going to be divided into three parts: visiting family, a ski hotel vacation, and my couch at home. So whether you’re packing for one of these, or all three, here’s my advice.

General Rules:

  • Remember what you have at home. Call a parent or younger sibling and ask them if they can quickly check what’s in your closet. You might not need to bring sweatpants or t-shirts home.
  • Remember where you are going. If you’re heading somewhere cold, don’t pack five pairs of shorts and all your bathing suits. Likewise, do not bring a winter coat to the Bahamas as you’ll drown sweating.
  • No matter where you go, you do NOT need more than four pairs of jeans. Seriously. Last year, I had six pairs of jeans and I alternated between two of them.
  • Don’t forget about New Year’s, so bring that sparkly shirt, fancy dress, skirt, or whatever else so even if you’re at home, you can still glam it up a little and watch the ball drop in Times Square.

Here are some things that come to mind for each of my three vacations:

1. Visiting Family at Christmas

You know there will be a thousand photos so looking festive and picture perfect is the goal.

  • A Classic Look: red sweater, jeans, flats, and a cute scarf
  • Cute and Casual: chambray shirt, leggings, boots, and a festive necklace

Or you can go all out like this family.

2. Hotel Vacation

  • A fancy outfit for dinner out on New Year’s.
  • Bathing suit for the hotel pool (or beach if you’re lucky enough to go somewhere warm)

3. The Couch/Stay at Home

  • Sweatpants! Believe me, when you’re not catching up with friends, you will want to be comfy. So bring your favorite pair of sweatpants and a comfy tee.
  • A cute outfit for shopping or hanging out with friends. Oversized sweaters are amazing when it comes to looking fashionable and being comfortable.

Remember that you’ll be home for roughly four weeks, so enjoy that time and don’t start your vacation off by having to drag that overweight bag through Logan airport.

Best of luck on finals and happy holidays!
