HC BC Rewind: Classic Childhood Television Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I am sure you have all had the same experience I had when you are flipping through the channels and realize there is nothing good on TV.  What happened to the days where you could not decide between Nickelodeon, Disney, or ABC Family?  I could never get enough of Tommy Pickles and the Gang or the romance of Cory and Topanga.  Here is a nice round up of only a few of the great television shows we spent hours watching as kids.

Zoom

I would have done anything to be on this show.  Unfortunately, I never got the chance, so I just attempted everything they did on TV in my own house.

Rugrats

Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica, Susie, Kimmy, and Dill were definitely the coolest babies around.  I mean who else kept a screwdriver in their diaper and drove around in a cool Reptar car?

Lizzie McGuire

Who couldn’t relate to Lizzie and her little animated self?  Whether she was bothered by her little brother, Matt, was trying to be super cool with Gordo and Miranda, being bullied by Kate, or swooning over Ethan Craft, we could all relate to her awkward middle school days.

Two of a Kind

And you thought these Dualstar celebrities couldn’t do any better after their “You’re Invited” and “Mystery Cases” shows, but the Olsen twins were unstoppable kids!  This weekly program told the lives of tomboy Mary Kate, girly Ashley, their dad, Kevin, and their cool babysitter, Carrie.

Figure It Out, Double Dare 2000, and all the other Nickelodeon Game Shows

These competitive game shows fit for kids were always fun to watch as and fun to dream of being a competitor on one day.  Plus, there was always the appealing aspect of slime involved.

Boy Meets World

This may be biased, but this was one of the greatest shows to be on TV.  We had the experience to grow up with Corey, Topanga, Shawn, Eric, and Mr. Feeney.  From their middle school to college experiences, I felt like I was part of the Matthews family.

All That

SNL for kids is the best way to describe this show of teenagers putting on hilarious skits like Repair Man, Dear Ashley, Vital Information with Lori-Beth Denberg, and Good Burger.  To finish off a great episode, there was always a popular singer like TLC or Vitamin C to perform a song.

Braceface

Who ever thought that getting braces also included being magnetically attached to lockers, hearing the radio through your mouth, or receive telephone frequencies?  With a catchy theme song, this show made us both excited and nervous about what our experience with braces would be like.

Saved by the Bell

Watching Saved by the Bell made me dream that my high school experience would be just like the one at Bayside High; lunches at The Max, a good looking boyfriend Slater, summers working on the beach, and an oblivious principal like Mr. Belding.  Unfortunately, Kelly Kapowski beat me in the better high school experience.

I am sure I could fill up pages upon pages with all the television we loved and adored of the 90’s, but it could possibly be a bit depressing because there is no longer such great TV shows on (sorry but Yo Gabba Gabba and Good Luck Charlie just does not cut it). If you ever need a childhood kick, I am sure you can search the Internet to find some copies online; Amazon will probably have some great finds!  In addition to the ones listed above, here are some other favorites you probably watched and enjoyed: Doug, As Told By Ginger, Even Stevens, Hey Arnold, Full House, Recess and Arthur.  The list can go on…
