Getting Home for the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Getting home for the holiday seasons can be a financial and strategic difficulty if you live a plane trip away from Boston. If this is the case, you may be having trouble deciding whether or not to make the trek and working out the many little details that accompany the journey. Here are five tips to help you work through this matter and make it home for at least some amount of time.

1. Kayak

Use a travel search engine such as Kayak to find the cheapest tickets and airlines. Kayak gathers information from all airlines and compares their prices side by side. Be sure to compare days, times, and airports as well to find the best deals. Lastly, make sure you clear your cookies before searching.

2. Hacker Fares

Hacker fares by no means sound like something good or positive, but I assure you they are. Hacker fares are the combination of two one-way tickets together to create a makeshift round-trip flight. They can make a world of difference as one airline may offer a better deal one way and another airline may offer a better deal the other way.

3. Travel Days

Each day of the week obviously results in different flight prices. While it may seem tempting to fly by the days that are most convenient, going through a bit more trouble to travel on cheaper days will definitely be a decision well worth it. Do a little preparation and try to fly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, as they’re the least expensive. Make sure that nothing will conflict with an important class, though.

4. When to Book

There is in fact a science behind when to book your flight. It may seem logical that the earlier you book the better, but this isn’t always the case. Based on past research it’s been found that booking exactly six weeks in advance is the magic formula to get your best price.

5. Studying

Last but not least, in the days leading up to your departure, work extra hard to finish your work and even get ahead if you can. This will allow for a stress-free and enjoyable trip you won’t regret.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
