College Fashion Week Boston: From Models’ Perspectives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The Estate came to life Saturday night as Her Campus’s College Fashion Week made its fourth and final stop in Boston. Collegiette models rocked the runway, sporting five looks:

  • You Snooze.
  • You Lose.Go to Class? I am Class.
  • Werk It!
  • Twerk It!
  • Twerk or Treat

The DJ kept everyone energized and excited, while various performances from student groups changed up the mood. The Dear Abbeys from BU sang some amazing a capella selections and BC Irish Dance stomped their hearts out. Everyone was looking great in their fancy dresses and cute skirts, ready for a fantastic night out of fashion.

Co-Campus Correspondent Kelsey Damassa and friends attended the event to support HC BC and other HC chapters.

Some of our Her Campus BC team members were models at the fashion show! Here are their experiences as models at this spectacular fashion show!

Alana Dolan, Class of 2015

When I first got the list of things I needed to bring to the College Week Fashion Show as a model, I’ll admit, I was intimidated.  Who knew there was so much that went into modeling? I sure didn’t. When I was told that I would need to arrive at the Estate at noon when the show wasn’t until six that night I thought it was absolutely crazy. Low and behold, we actually did need all those hours to prepare, but we did not necessarily need all of the items we were told to bring. With Luna bars, Chipotle and Neuro Sonic drinks, we were able to push through nine hours of hard work and fun! Fellow HC BC members, Diana Sanborn, Meaghan Leahy, Blake Acquarulo, Elizabeth LeRoux and I made our way over to the Estate with Starbucks in hand, ready for what was in store for us. When we arrived, we started with fittings. Next, it was time for hair and make up! Personally, as someone who really hates doing her own, well anything to get ready– this was my favorite part of the day. Be Styled did an amazing job on everyone’s hair and the woman who did make up worked really hard to make sure that the make up was flawless. After hair and make up was done, some of the models were brought to Sports Club/ LA for a photo shoot in a barre class while others were brought to the Commons to do a shoot there. Meaghan and I were in the barre photo shoot wearing our fabulous work out gear donated by Sports Club/LA and their partners.

HC BC Team Members, Blake Acquarulo and Elizabeth LeRoux, had a great time modeling too!

After a few run-throughs, it was finally show time. Each girl got up on the runway and strutted her stuff before running to change into her next outfit. With the help of the Dear Abby’s, an acapella group from BU and BC Irish Dance, the show flowed smoothly with Windsor Western announcing each scene. This experience was absolutely amazing and so much fun. It gave all the models the opportunity to try something new as well as meet some awesome Her Campus girls from other schools as well as girls who are just readers of HC. I would highly recommend to any girl who thinks she might like to participate in an event like this to do it! You meet so many great people, get to try on amazing clothes and have your hair and make up done for you. This was in no way a serious event like the Fashion Weeks you see in Milan or New York, this was a casual, college girls being college girls event and I am so excited for next year’s!

Meaghan Leahy, Class of 2015

I am 5’4”, with freckles and size 9-10 feet. I never had braces, but I wear the world’s most librarian-y glasses ever, and I have three pairs of them. I have a small chest, I have curly brown hair, I lack proper posture—not once have I ever been mistaken for a model. But on October 26th, I got to be one for a whole day.

The five BC models—I’m second from the left in a black peplum top.

You can read more about the Her Campus College Fashion Week, so I won’t bore you will all the details, but some quick background information is that I, along with four other girls from Boston College and about twenty other Boston-area collegiettes (think: Tufts, BU, Northeastern, etc.) arrived at The Estate Boston at noon on Saturday to start preparing for the show at 7 p.m. I was surprised by how much work went into the preparation—I’ve never changed in and out of the same pair of sweats so much in my life. I don’t remember all the brands and styles, but I definitely window-shopped while I was waiting to be fitted.  Of all the different themes, I was in the workout wear, party attire, and Halloween costume scenes.

The workout wear was definitely my thing. While FILA isn’t a brand I would normally pick up (more of a Nike girl with a side addiction to Lululemon), I really enjoyed the quality of the shirt they put me in—I thought it was a burnout-cottony material, but it was easily the softest thing I’ve ever touched in my life. Their vibrant crops and colorful sneakers were also a plus. After taking some pre-show pictures with the other workout wear models (and HC National Team members Kelsey Thorn and Brittany Lewis) at a barre studio room, I’m seriously wishing I had a membership at Sports Club/LA because I’ve never seen a fancier gym with cooler-looking water bottles. Bonus: their trainers are totally built and very fun, doing squats with us onstage and everything. Get me out of the Plex, seriously.

I wore a very flattering black peplum top with a studded neckline for the party scene (I think the tag said AX, but I’m not sure what brand that is), along with my own jeans and heels. Really wish I could have kept that on the entire night, but for the Halloween-themed ending, I wore my own Rosie the Riveter costume—jeans, brown boots, chambray shirt from my days interning at Anthropologie, and my red bandana from the Welles Remy Crowther 5K last week. This was hands down the easiest scene for me to do, because instead of feeling mildly self-conscious and not knowing what to do, I walked down the runway with my arms crossed and struck the “We Can Do It!” pose at the end. If Rosie the Riveter isn’t confident and awesome, I’m not really sure who is.

Be Styled (a blowdry bar in The Street Chestnut Hill) did a FANTASTIC job with my hair, putting it up in a “be swept” bun with a side part, something that worked for all my looks (and still looked great when I took it down after the show to go to a Disney-themed party as Kim Possible). The makeup artist was very skilled, and considering that I seriously never wear makeup, I didn’t feel too overdone at all.

My favorite part? THE LUNA BARS. I have a serious, crippling addiction, and already had a large amount in my room prior to the event, but when the Chipotle lunch was served while I was over at Sports Club/LA taking pictures and I came back to leftover chips and a vegetarian burrito, I started squirreling away the LUNA bars that were provided for us to snack on throughout the day. I washed some of them down with the neuro SONIC drink that I tried for the first time and didn’t hate at all. I may or may not have gone to Star Market yesterday and almost bought five more.

You win a free LUNA bar if you can guess how many of these I had before the show. Hint: I already had the Carrot Cake and Nutz Over Chocolate boxes, so that’s 30 fewer than you probably thought.

So, in summation, I had a blast working with my fellow HC BC staff, the girls from other HC chapters, and the HC national team. I would consider signing up to do this again, I would love to attend a show as a non-model, and I would recommend either experience to everyone!
