Snow and the City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

If tomorrow’s forecast proves anything, it’s that we’re not free from the snow. Not yet, at least. Until warmer days come, we’re bringing you a comprehensive list of the city’s best spots to hit up on a snowy day.

1. The Whitney Museum

Although undoubtedly the most #basic suggestion on this list, you can’t go wrong with a snow day visit to the Whitney.  Frank Stella: A Retrospective may have closed on Sunday, but the Abstract Expressionism floor contains several bright, engaging works to distract from the dreary weather.  After exploring each floor, grab lunch with a friend at the museum’s café and enjoy an unparalleled view of the snow-covered city, courtesy of Architect Renzo Piano’s vast windows.

2. City Bakery Hot Chocolate Festival

For some, February means Valentine’s Day.  For our team, February means the glorious return of the City Bakery Hot Chocolate Festival.  Throughout this month, stop into this Flatiron-based bakery for a new, delectable hot chocolate flavor each day.  Keep warm tomorrow with Ecuadorian Milk Chocolate or treat yourself this Sunday with a cup of City’s signature “Love Potion” Hot Chocolate.  Either way, you can’t go wrong!

3. Toby’s Estate Coffee

Take a break from Butler and head downtown to Toby’s Estate Coffee, located in the heart of Flatiron.  This cozy coffee shop not only serves up delicious espresso, but also inimitable ambiance.  Situated inside a Club Monaco, the back room’s towering bookshelves – the result of a partnership with Strand Books – will inspire you to power through your reading in record time, while the shop’s marble fireplace will undoubtedly warm the seemingly inescapable winter chill.

4. Central Park

For those of you brave enough to venture outdoors this winter, head to Central Park for sledding, snowball fights, and, most importantly, the Instagram.  Whether you go for an #aesthetic shot of the park or a snow day self with your gal pals, snow days in Central Park make for great social media posts.

5. Momofuku Milk Bar

Looking to reduce your Momofuku expenditures?  Consider signing up for a class in Momofuku Milk Bar’s “Bake the Book Series”!  If you’re willing to trek to Williamsburg, you can learn the secrets behind the bakery’s tastiest treats and, for the remainder of the winter, satisfy your sweet tooth for free.
