The Perfect Plate in Three Steps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

We eat with our eyes first, and especially now because our standards are rising in food production. Your dish needs to be drool worthy. Making a dessert for Valentine’s Day or a dip for the Super Bowl?  Don’t worry -it only takes three steps to make a beautiful plate so you’ll have time to worry about what to wear!

1) Less is more. Your goal is to make the dish look like it popped out of a magazine.

The food needs to have neat lines and a simple design, that means don’t add too much garnish. If you mess with it too much trying to make it look nice, it makes it look too handled and unnatrual. If decorating, choose an attainable project for your skill level. Save the challenges for home so there is no stress if you make a mistake. Pinterest, Taste of Home, and Martha Stewart all have ideas that are quick and easy.

Indivualizing like done with this seven layer dip may take a little extra time, but it keeps the guests from worrying about germs (double dippers). It also has an added bonus of staying beautiful instead of looking like mush as the night goes on. If you really want to wow the guests use glass, for example a shot glass -that would be a perfect bite size portion.

2) Choose a plate that matches the mood of the event.

These are some options:

 Match the theme.

A football shaped plate or use one that matches the colors of your team.

A heart shaped plate for Valentine’s Day.

Use a solid color plate. Let the food do the talking.

Let the creativity flow. For example, use a cupcake or cake stand to plate anything from fruit to cups of trail mix. It gives the food height which makes it look gourmet.

Make sure the dish is blemish free after you plate it. Sprinkle hot water over a towel and carefully wipe away any smears or crumbs if it looks bad. Don’t forget to provide tools to pick up the food.

3) Make it standout. For usually boring food, use seasonal decor. It can be items that remind you of spring, Valentine’s Day, football, or a winter snow.

If it isn’t perfect it will okay! Messy looks delicious too! The taste will make up for anything!
