UA’s rising star, Winston “Winnie Boy Genius” Marshall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

Winston “Winnie Boy Genius” Marshall, creator of his record label/production company, “Genius Airlines,” is going places. Marshall, a senior psych and creative writing major and music minor, has been singing since age 8, writing at 10, and rapping since he was 18. Winston, born in Nassau Bahamas, and raised in Florida, has always had a natural talent for music. With his music that he describes as “Unique, diverse and real,” he is taking hip hop to a new level. After a year internship at Park Avenue Records, (the U A music label) he had the “idea to take music…not just hip hop, but music to a place it has never been before,” he said. Winston has performed at The Rock, Club Centro, The Tucson Omni National, (Golf Resort & Spa) and Campus Candy. He also opened for Twista at the DV8 Nightclub in Phoenix this February. Read on to learn more about Winston, and ladies, he’s single!

HC: How would you describe your music to new fans?
WM: Unique, diverse and real. My sound & vibe are unlike anything anyone has heard before which is exactly what I want. To me…style, flow, delivery, creativity, lyrical content and how you carry yourself are what set good artists from great artists and Grammy winners apart from the one hit wonders.

HC: How did you come up with your name?
WM: When I was little all my relatives called me “Winnie” and once I got to college all the girls started to…I am and always will be a kid at heart so that’s where the “Boy” comes in… and In 3rd grade they tested me with a 161 IQ so the “Genius” thing just sort of always stuck with me… Winnie Boy Genius.

HC: Who/what influences your sound?
WM:  Besides Lil Wayne & Young Money, Kanye, Eminem, T.I., Fabolous, Ludacris, the artists who set the bar, I’m influenced by my day to day life…my real friends…my family…every bit of music I hear…especially hip hop…sports…tv….movies…I’m a pop culture junkie.

HC: What’s your favorite song of yours and what is it about?
WM: These days every new track I make becomes my new favorite to be honest, LOL, but I’d have to say “I Won’t Stop” the song being pitched to Nike right now. It’s about going under, over, around or through any and everything in your way to make it to the top.

HC: What do you write about in your lyrics?
WM: My perspective. The roller coaster of life, ups and downs, relationships, achievements and my goals that turn to dreams that turn into realities.
