New Year, Better Habits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

In the madness of each New Year we are filled with ideas of what we want to change about ourselves. Instead of focusing on change, why not focus on just bettering who we are and what we have now? Here are some new habits to pick up on this year for a better, healthier you!

Find new inspirations. Our generation spends a lot of time on our phones, finding the newest video being shared on Facebook, picking the right photo for Instagram, browsing Pinterest to fulfill our dreams of what we will fill our closets with… these are things we can use to inspire us and turn us into healthy and happy collegiettes.

If you are a frequent Instagrammer, check out accounts that will leave you with warm fuzzies, like Happsters for a daily dose of sweet pictures and inspiring words.

Also, if you like your daily dose of #foodporn, follow accounts that will motivate you to recreate their colorful and hopefully tasty creations, like CleanEatz. Run by two girls who stick together to motivate each other, CleanEatz can show you healthy ways to fuel your body.

Inspiration can’t always be recreated easily, so if you have a touch of wanderlust, check out accounts like Passion Passport, where you will see beautiful photos of places around the world.

Find what you like to do to be healthy. Many people will make the resolution to go to the gym more this year, but what happens if you just can’t bring yourself to mindlessly run on the treadmill or lift weights on machines you have no idea how to use? Try finding an activity you enjoy doing, such as yoga, cardio dance, Pilates or water aerobics. At App, we have a ton of group fitness classes led by awesome people, ready to help you find your niche and meet your goal. For the schedule and description of classes, click here ! If hitting the gym isn’t your cup of tea, find something fun to do in the fresh air! Boone has a ton of hiking places along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and hey, your Insta of your hike may inspire someone else to get out and “be one with nature.”

Keep yourself healthy. Getting into routine of getting healthier can be easier said than done sometimes, especially when you’re changing up your diet. It’s smart to get some supplements to help your get health goal going, like a women’s daily multivitamin such as Nature Made for Her. You can get most of the vitamins needed from your food, so you just have to make sure you are eating the best for your body and fitness plan. As long as your are picking foods that aren’t high in sodium, fat, and all those bad starches, you can find a ton of healthy recipes on Pinterest and cookbooks, Amazon has great options such as Weeknight Fresh and Fast: Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week or the Eating Well Healthy in a Hurry: 150 Delicious Recipes for Simple, Everyday Suppers in 45 minutes or Less.

Just because it’s a new year, doesn’t mean there needs to be a brand new you. The you that you are is a talented, beautiful, smart, kind and funny person. You just need to find the things out there that will bring out your own unique traits and most importantly, make you feel good about yourself!
