Girl Scout Cookies: What Are You Really Getting?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Guess what time of the year it is, collegiettes? Girl Scout cookie time!

Imagine this. You stumble across some Girl Scouts somewhere and give in to your every desire and buy a box (or two or three). You go to your car and slide your finger underneath the front flap, careful not to damage the box, holding the precious cargo. You pull out one of the packets wrapped in foil and rip open the top of the packet, sliding a cookie out as you do. With your other hand you grab that cookie, size it up, and take one small, slow bite to savor the mouth-watering goodness.

But wait. Did you know that you could be eating a different kind of your favorite Girl Scout cookiethan you’re used to? That’s right! There are two kinds –or more accurately—two companies that make their own variation of your cookie: ABC Bakers and Little Brown Bakers. The area you live in depends on the cookies you get.

No wonder you can’t find Samoas around here because there are only Caramel deLites.

Another difference is in everyone’s favorite: Thin Mints. Can you remember if your Thin Mints taste crunchier and mintier? Or, richer and smoother in its chocolate coating? Think you have it? Here, we definitely have the crunchy and minty cookie. But, wouldn’t you just love to try the smoother chocolate coating with a peppermint instead of mint taste? Oh, well, at least *our* cookie has more protein and is, therefore, healthier.

Don’t get too happy yet. While we get Lemonades, the states that are hosted by Little Brown Bakers get powdered sugar cookie with a hint of lemon. Say, what?

If you want to know which states host which companies, check the interactive map from LATimes and ask yourself their questions.

If you have become sufficiently hungry for some Girl Scout Cookies of your own, fear not—Boone does have some!

According to girlscouts.org, the cookie season is officially underway! You can buy your Girl Scout cookies from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Boone Mall, 1 – 5 p.m. on 630 W. King Street, 12 – 4 p.m. at Highland Commons, or 12 – 6 p.m. at Lowe’s Foods. If you want to find any more locations or find out any more times, check out the official cookie finder.

So go ahead, collegiettes! Check it out for yourself and see if the cookies really are where the website says they are! (Fair warning: snowmageddon may have thrown off the cookie sales for a bit.) Happy hunting (and eating)!
