Treading back and forth across App’s campus can be an uphill battle (literally) no matter what season it is; this is why you need something stylish and comfy covering your feet. See if you can name one student at App State who doesn’t own a pair of boots (guys included). I put you up to the challenge but I guarantee you won’t find a single person to fit in that criteria. So, you might be wondering…what essentials are you missing from your closet? Well, boot lovers, here’s a list of the top 5:

1. Snow Boot

I have to admit I was not a fan of the cliché duck boots in the beginning, but when I first saw the ones shown above, it was love at first sight. I’m a sucker for brown boots. I personally like the different look as opposed to the two toned combination you see everywhere across campus. You may want to invest in the shearling lined (for $100 more than the original) because you will want that extra layer of warmth for Boone’s frigid subzero temperatures. The heavy traction comes in handy for those icy sidewalks and steps, and the slippery slopes (for when you sled down the steep Suicide Hill). They have the look of a regular boot because of the leather exterior but have the durability to withstand blizzard conditions (plus, they are not only for snow…who knew?!) What more can you ask out of a winter boot?

Warning: putting them on and getting them off takes some effort, but you can’t say you didn’t see that coming!

2. Rain Boot

These are a must have in case a monsoon hits, which can be quite common for Boone’s unpredictable weather. How can you go wrong with Coach, Hunter, Burberry, Bogs or some off brand from Target for that matter?! Who cares anyway? Rainy days are dreary and they give you a chance (or an excuse) to have fun with your outfit and make it pop. Mix and match with eccentric colors, designs, and patterns or show off your favorite logo. This is a boot you don’t need to spend an excessive amount of money on, unless, of course, you want a certain brand. Just make sure they are fully waterproof!

Tip: Don’t make the mistake, I repeat, DON’T make the mistake of wearing these in the snow because your feet will freeze (even with lining).

3. UGG Boot

Okay, so they may not be the prettiest boots (I think the short ones are more visually appealing), but in the chilliest of winters, your feet will be oh so toasty in that thick sheepskin fur. Might I add they are easy to slip on and off AND you can wear them with practically anything and not be judged.  Just a warning: it is NOT a good idea to wear them in rain or snow. Colorful or glittery, short or tall, embellished or textured (and the list doesn’t stop there)…the choices are endless. I own a neutral color (chocolate), so that I can wear them more often. The are a bit pricey but the warmth these boots bring is worth it!

4. Riding Boot

This is one of my personal favorites (I am a huge fan of the two-toned). Riding boots are fashionable and versatile all in one. You can dress them up or down all year round which is what I love. I will admit it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the designer for this specific boot (Frye, Tory Burch, Michael Kors), but there are many less expensive alternatives. You just have to decide if the name brand makes a difference to you or not. We all know there is something about the flashiness of the logo that makes us strut our stuff with confidence and poise. It not only makes us seem powerful, but it makes us feel sophisticated and classy. Riding boots in general can dress up a casual outfit. Maybe it’s the heel, the slimming effect, or the rich texture of the leather, or it could be that they are almost knee high; whatever it is, it’s eye-catching.

5. Combat Boot

If you want to put a little edge to your outfit, do it with these military style boots. They are a shorter lace up shoe (you can tie them up all the way or even fold them down), but there is an accessible zipper on the side, which makes them simple to slide on and off. Just make sure you wear it with slim-fitting bottoms that can tuck into the boot. The distressed leather can either make them look vintage-like or urban chic when paired perfectly with flannels or other casual attire. One thing is for sure: they undoubtedly make a statement in any season.

*Both combat boots and riding boots should be worn in dry conditions.

My wardrobe is currently overflowing with boots but I personally think you can never have enough (especially when you go to college in the mountains). The more options, the better! I suggest getting the ones you need first, before even thinking about splurging on ones that you want (trust me, I know temptation isn’t easy). So…Despite the fact that I have gone against my own advice once before, I recommend to all the college students who are struggling to save, save, save and treat yourself when you can actually afford it! You can use this shoe guide to help you survive the brisk falls, harsh winters, and somewhat springs of Boone. So if you happen to be missing one of the essentials, time to start shopping! Oh, and good news ladies: leggings (otherwise known as a girl’s best friend) can be worn with ALL of the above. It’s a dream come true.
