My Semester Abroad: Prague Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Squid sneezed on the beat, and the beat got sicker

Honestly, just barely survived a parasite. Or at least the stomach bug- seriously no idea what it was but it was miserable. 90% the Budapest night time bath party is what got to me but it was worth it for sure. I haven’t written in awhile so this post is going to be covering the past 3 weekends… oops.

Weekend 1 was Easter so we had Monday off from school, so we decided to combine Vienna and Budapest over the longer break. Vienna with the boys was one of our classier and calmer trips. We stayed in a sweet hostel (oxymoron I know but it was actually nice) and met up with Chris’ parents for a 4 hour tour one morning followed by a cute lunch and shopping around the city. Since it was just me and 5 boys traveling in Vienna you may assume that conversation surrounded testosterone filled topics like beer and sports but our night 2 dinner conversation was solely about the topic of marriage and future wives (husband in my case). Just imagine how this conversation went—“I see you marrying ~~xyz~~ David! I feel like you’d look best with a girl like _____” “Okay maybe but like where would I meet her?? How old do you think we’ll be? Is she a cougar or am I marrying a hot girl that’s 12 years younger?” GREAT dinner conversation FYI, I’ve had it now with ~1000 people and listening to everyone’s opinions is hilarious. After 2 nights in Vienna the 6 of us bussed it to Budapest to meet up with 2 more of the boys and went exploring during the day, hit the Ruin Bars at night (which were toooooo cool) and then made out way to the bath parties late. At the baths you check all of your stuff in a locker, throw on your bathing suit, go swim for 3 or 4 hours and then attempt to find your locker before leaving around 3 am.

Upon entrance I sat myself down for 5-10 minutes attempting to memorize my locker number, essentially the most thinking I’ve had to do whilst abroad. Needless to say Sunday morning was a tough one and I was meeting the fam around 2pm… We slept in and recovered after the ridiculousness that was our Saturday night and I went over and crashed with my jetlagged seeeesters. We went on a beeeeautiful dinner boat cruise on the river and saw maybe the most magical looking buildings in Europe (the parliament building in Budapest could be the 8th wonder of the world). Unfortunately, I had to leave the next morning and found myself incredibly ill for the next week… The family stayed in Budapest until Wednesday when they came to meet me in Prague, but at that point I was on my death bed and so SO sick. It wasn’t the most ideal situation because I couldn’t play tour guide much and they had to explore parts of Prague without me, but it was definitely nice to have someone buying me medicine and checking on me ;) Apart from my sickness having the fam here was awesome and we went to really cool restaurants where I basically just observed them eating in an attempt to curb my hunger and also ease my nausea.

When everyone left Sunday I quickly made my way to the hospital to try and get someone to diagnose whatever my illness was and the legitimately almost sent me away with JUST NOSE DROPS. I’m sorry but I feel like when a patient says they haven’t kept food down for 5 days you don’t give them nose drops… it reminded me of elementary school where regardless, if someone puked in school, got stung by a bee, or “accidentally” fell down the slide they all just got an ice pack. I’m going to enter the medical world solely to eliminate the language barrier in different countries between doctor and patient… see you in 10 years when I’m done with school. This past weekend I went to Italia and had the most unbelievable time, but I’ll get to that in my next post! Only 4 more weekends until I’m back in the US eeeeeeeek!!!
