Campus Profile Evan Paul ’18

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.
Meet Evan Paul ’18, this week’s Campus Profile with a bright smile and a lovely outlook on life: “Listen to Your Heart”

Tell me about where are you from:

I’m from Waco, Texas. It’s not very large, like say Dallas or Austin, but it’s definitely not a village. It’s also home to Baylor University, which is great if you like college sports. Sic ‘Em Bears!

How does the weather at Amherst compare to the weather back home?:

I’d say based on the way the weather has been this season, Waco and Amherst haven’t been that different. They’re both equally unpredictable. Although, I will say last Winter was the most snow I’ve ever seen in my life.

Why did you choose to attend Amherst?:

I chose Amherst because it was the only college I visited that felt right. I knew I wanted something smaller than everything else I’d looked at, but I didn’t quite know that I wanted Liberal Arts until I came to Amherst.

What are you interested in both academically and leisurely?:

Academically I’m most interested in English (I’m a declared major) and SWAGS. If you haven’t yet taken at class with Professor Worsley, I really suggest you do so. Leisurely, I’m very interested in writing and reading. My favorite authors are always changing but right now I’d say it’s Nora Ephron, Virginia Woolf, and Marisha Pessl. I’m also becoming very interested in essay collections lately.

What are you passionate about the most?:

I’d say I’m most passionate about following your heart. I think people tend to ignore those gut feelings when they’re making big decisions, just because that may not be what’s widely accepted as okay, or expected. But at the end of the day, it’s your life and you only get one, so you should make sure you’re happy.

What are your plans for the rest of your time at Amherst and beyond:

My plans for the rest of my time here are to continue singing in my a capella group and continue being an RC. Those two things are new to me this year, but they’ve become some of my favorite aspects of my time at Amherst so far. I also plan to continue writing for the Student Newspaper. Beyond Amherst is kind of up in the air for me. Originally I wanted to become a professor, but more recently I’ve realized that I enjoy journalism and creative writing more than the thought of teaching. So…I’m not really sure!

If you could make one change to the world, playful or serious, what would it be?:

If I could make one change to the world I would make everyone spend thirty ignoring their problems. Like, truly ignoring them, not sitting on their phone while the issues loom in the back of their minds. Just, truly forget about them for half an hour every single day.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to say but never got the chance to say it?:

I really can’t think of anything right now… maybe that I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer is overrated? That sounds silly, but I’ve never really met anyone that has anything negative to say about it, nor have I had the courage to tell the avid fans my true feelings. Now I guess everyone will know! Oh well!
