Campus Celebrity: Ellie Andersen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Meet Senior History major, Ellie Andersen!

What extra-curricular activities do you participate in? Powerhouse Committee, Campus Community Coordinator, Food writer for the Amherst Student, Amherst Field Hockey, Book and Plow Farm Committee, Amherst Military Support Corps

How did you get involved with the Powerhouse? As the Campus Community Coordinator, I worked on Late Night Val and Pub Night last year, and over the summer I worked in private events at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a farm-to-table restaurant outside NYC.  I have seen how much good can come from well-conceived events and was thrilled when the opportunity arose to get the Powerhouse into operation and organize cool events.

What kinds of things do you do each week to improve the Powerhouse? Each week our committee meets to discuss how we can improve our events and operations, as well as how to push the Powerhouse towards our immediate goal of opening for daily use. We meet with members of the administration and hold community meetings to encourage feedback from all sides and hear how we can keep students excited about the beautiful space.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far, with regards to the Powerhouse? I believe interacting outside the classroom with smart, interesting, and ambitious Amherst students is one of the most important parts of an Amherst education, so I love to see the Powerhouse playing a critical role in fostering these interactions.

What challenges have you faced? One challenge is to keep the Powerhouse growing into a critical part of campus life through developing fresh ideas for exciting new events.  We are so lucky to have such innovative and enthusiastic students coming to us with awesome ideas and working with us to produce a wide array of events ranging from themed dance parties, to an International Student Association party, to a class’s art show centering on women in art.

What do you have planned for the future of the PowerhouseThe Powerhouse has such huge potential, I would like to see it become a key part of student life bringing together all students for enjoyable gatherings where they can meet and interact with a broad swath of the student body.  I see the Powerhouse becoming a reliable part of student life that can accommodate all of our needs and reflect key Amherst values of inclusion, tolerance, and having fun.
