Why You Should Take Up Pole Fitness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

As we all set back into our college routines and see our friends, we are forced to reminisce about everything we did over the summer. While some have great stories about trips, relationships and partying, I discovered a new passion. This summer, I was the maid of honor at my sisters wedding. And with that title comes great responsibility and memories. One of the many tasks I had to handle was the bachelorette party, but little did I know that what was going to be a fun night of activities would lead me to discover and unconventional new sport.

We went to a pole dancing class as a way to prepare my sister for her wedding. It started out as a joke until we realized my sister and I were actually good on the pole. From the first few minutes, we could twirl around and caught on to the new steps quickly. I felt so powerful and didn’t want to get down.

Since then, I tried to go regularly to multiple classes over the summer and it taught me many things. This is why I believe we should ALL start pole dancing every now and then.

1. Anyone can do it. Ok, some may be better than others, but a simple pole routine can entertain even the most sedentary person in the room.

2. You WILL feel fabulous. I swear after each class finished I had an inner discussion with myself as to why I hadn’t gotten a pole for my room just to practice (I decided against it as I thought it would be taking it a bit too far). The feeling I got after each class was exhilarating.

3. It is a great workout. Seriously, ever since I started pole dancing, I see exotic dancers with a whole new level of respect. It is extremely hard and you can feel every muscle of your body improving with every minute you are on the pole. I repeat, anyone who pole dances professionally has my total respect. It takes some awesome resistance to dance on that for hours at a time.

4. It makes you creative. My imagination was very activated while working on the pole.

5. Your posture will improve! I don’t know if it’s the new confidence I have or maybe it’s the moves, but ever since I started pole dancing my posture has been significantly better.

6. You will never feel sexier. If you are ever feeling sad or down on yourself just grab a pole, and if you don’t have one nearby maybe grab a column from some building. Pole dancing improves your mood and boosts how you are feeling about yourself.

7. As a bonus I should mention you will become completely flexible, and who doesn’t want that?

Those are some of the reasons why I recommend we all take the time to do some pole dancing. It is a sexy sport, if you are up for a challenge, definitely try something different and take up pole dancing. You never know where these new set of skills will take you.
