Why We Love to Hate Kylie Jenner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

When I was in middle school, it was all the rage to be obsessed with the Kardashians. I never understood it because we’re essentially praising a show about a woman who got famous from a sex tape, and her family who were reaping all the benefits of it. Years later, I have to say I understand the appeal a little more. Watching the show has become a guilty pleasure of mine, blame it on boredom or just general curiosity. Everyone loves to see what they are wearing, what obnoxious thing they are currently fighting about, or who Khloe is going to curse out next. However one thing that still doesn’t make sense to me is Kylie Jenner.

We all watched her grow up as we did. But let’s just be honest for a second, no one really paid attention to her. She was just the bratty one, who copied everything Kendall did. Then she turned 17, started drawing her lips weirdly, and now the whole world is Kylie-krazy. I just don’t get it. There’s so much about her appearance and overall behavior that is praised, and I think it’s time we put an end to it.

Guys, really it’s no big deal. I’ll never get why people make such a big deal about her. I understand if it’s Kendall, I mean she’s the new “it” girl of the modeling world. But what does Kylie even do to warrant this kind of attention?? Every selfie and tweet is like national news. The second she steps outside her house, ninety different social media sites are covering it, as if our lives are suddenly better once we know that she made it to CVS safely.

Queen Kylie? Haha, no. She wears six Cartier “Love” Bracelets on her wrist. All together it values about $40,000. Now I know it’s not a new thing for famous people to wear gaudy things, but this just seems to be a little too much. If I could walk around with college tuition on my wrist at all times, I’d just start a tab everywhere. But since I can’t, it just makes me mad. I mean, how obnoxious is that to walk around with more money on your person than most of us will see at this age. Who does she think she is? The Queen?

She’s trying to grow up too fast. I don’t know about you but when I was seventeen, I had a whole different set of priorities. For one, I was completely concerned with preparing for college. My life was filled with the PSAT’s and meeting with my college advisor, and of course hanging with my friends. I feel like we wouldn’t hate her as much, if we saw her doing things that normal 17 year olds do. Instead we open up Instagram, see her hanging with rappers and actors twice her age, and just get angry. Oh, and she’s supposedly dating a guy who’s 8 years older than her. Kris, not trying to give you any parenting advice here, but my mom would definitely never let that happen. Just saying.

Puberty? Don’t make me laugh! Everyone loves to say, “Puberty treated her so nicely!”, but I’m very certain that puberty doesn’t actually work like that. She has access to the best makeup artists, trainers, surgeons. When you’ve got all that at your disposal, it’s easy to go from pale skin and thin lips to long weaves, pushed up boobs, and lips bigger than the state of California. As someone who spent most of her adolescence with acne and oily skin, Kylie’s facial transformation is just another reason I am not her biggest fan. Pimples are normal to us, Kylie. If you don’t have any, we don’t know where to put you.

And are going to talk about her appropriating Black culture… or nah? It might just be something that I noticed, being African- American, but big lips and weave are not a new thing people! In fact before Kylie decided that bringing her lip liner to her chin was fashion, it used to be considered unattractive and ingenuine to have bigger lips and hair that wasn’t yours. Just because Kylie does it or wears it, now it’s beautiful? #IDontGetIt

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the dreads…

I’m just over keeping up with Kylie!
